“Americas Now” had a chance to sit down with the President of Panama at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Juan Carlos Varela has been Panama’s president since 2014.
In June 2017, Panama opened a new chapter in its international relations by establishing diplomatic ties with China. It was an historic moment for both countries. China is one of the biggest users of the Panama Canal when it comes to shipping.
In addition to opening China’s new Embassy in Panama, Chinese companies are constructing ports in the country as well. With the 5 billion dollar expansion of the Panama Canal complete bigger vessels are able to pass through carrying double the number of containers.
Anchor Elaine Reyes asks President Varela about Panama’s relationship with China and other developments taking place in his nation.
