International Maritime Organization advances rules to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on ships

News from Panama / Friday, October 18th, 2024

The Committee for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has made important progress in the creation of binding rules to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in maritime transport.

At the 82nd session of the committee, held from September 30 to October 4, 2024, the Member States developed a draft legal that will serve as the basis for the implementation of “medium-term measures” in 2025.

These measures include regulations on maritime fuels with lower GHG intensity and a global emissions pricing mechanism. The goal is for the sector to achieve zero net emissions by 2050 or around that date.

In addition, the possible creation of a GHG intensity register and a funding fund to facilitate the implementation of the proposed measures were discussed.
