News from Panama / Friday, January 17th, 2025

The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMPHA) assured that the phenomenon of La Niña 2025, has the particularity that coincides with the dry season of the country, so it is unlikely that its impacts are as significant, as in previous events.

The director of IMPHA, Luz Graciela de Calzadilla, clarified that this will be an attenuated or weak girl, with moderate effects and limited duration to approximately four months, from January to April.

“We will have a humid dry season, with more cloudy days and occasional rains, but torrential rains like the ones we experienced in December are not expected due to specific cold fronts,” he said.

In contrast, on the Caribbean side, La Niña usually decreases rainfall, which contrasts with the higher rainfall expected for the Pacific, this variable behavior reflects the complex characteristics of the phenomenon.

Calzadilla also highlighted that, although the month of December recorded above-normal rains due to synoptic events of cold fronts, these conditions will not be replicated in the following months.

“The quarter of December, January, February has shown unusual accumulations, but for the summer, we expect cloudiness and moderate rains, without extreme conditions,” Calzadilla added.

The director of IMPHA recommended that the Panamanian population must adapt to these weather conditions, since the phenomenon will impact agricultural, logistical and tourist activities, and despite this, the forecast points to a stable management of climatic conditions during this brief period of La Niña.
