Guatemala and Panama seek to stop illegal fishing

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) and the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority signed a memorandum of understanding that seeks to combat illegal fishing.

In agreement, it contemplates the installation of working tables in which authorities linked to the issue of fisheries and trade regulation of both nations will participate and integrate fishermen, in order to achieve consensus for compliance with national, regional and international standards.

The Deputy Minister of Agricultural Health and Regulations of Guatemala, Víctor Hugo Guzmán, explained that this action strengthens the bonds of friendship between the two countries and outlines actions to combat illegal fishing on both coasts.

The cooperation will also make it possible to share and exchange information on fishing activities, information on vessels, licensing and their activities on the high seas in order to establish better monitoring, control and surveillance of fisheries.

Hugo Guiraud, accredited ambassador of Panama in Guatemala, thanked Guatemala for its constant collaboration and stressed that the signing of this memorandum of understanding strengthens the bonds of friendship.

Flor Torrijos, general administrator of the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama, stressed that one of the objectives is to ensure that fishery products have legal origin.

He added that after 16 months of work, the signing of this document has been achieved, which represents important advances between two nations that have 87 years of commercial relationship.
