If the bill that has already been approved in a first debate in Congress successful, the Panamanian mobile telephone market will have only three participants, instead of four, as at present.
The aim of the bill is “… to consolidate the market so that the necessary investments in infrastructure can be achieved and thus technologically renew coverage of these services in Panama.”
However, at the request of telephone operators, for now the bill will not move on to the next step in the process, a second debate, but will be analyzed again by the deputies, who will listen again to comments and consultations of those interested in the subject.
“… Telefónica (Movistar), Cable & Wireless, Digicel and Claro, which operate 6.9 million active lines, are currently participating in the mobile telephony market in Panama. Panama is one of the few countries where four mobile telephone companies operate, contrary to what happens in other countries where only two or three companies operate, with many more inhabitants.”
