Panama’s San Blas Islands is paradise without all of the bells and whistles.

The under-the-radar archipelago comprises more than 360 islands and cays off of Panama’s Caribbean coast, a majority of which are uninhabited.

However, the ecotourism haven is home to the indigenous Guna people and renowned for its culture, pristine nature, crystal clear waters, marine life and world-class sailing.

Whether touring by foot, kayak, sailboat or catamaran, visitors are all but certain to fall in love with this unspoiled destination.

While tourists won’t find a bevy of luxe accommodations or man-made attractions on Chichime Island and other hotspots throughout the San Blas Islands, they’ll experience plenty of stunning beaches covered in idyllic palm trees and unrivaled hospitality, including cozy rustic cabins.

Nonetheless, a more traditionally touristy experience can be had on Perro Island.

Overall, the lack of extensive development on the islands means that visitors are able to experience it like a local, whether snorkeling offshore, eating traditional Guna cuisine, drinking rum from a coconut, viewing Guna artwork or even learning the language.

The best part is there are plenty of tour operators standing by ready to get you there. Take a day trip from Panama City or spend several nights to take a deeper dive into the Guna culture.
