El Niño phenomenon would arrive in Panama at a bad time

News from Panama / Friday, December 30th, 2022

This time could occur when the rainy season should begin in the country, which would imply the extension of the dry season. In the new Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) there is concern about the transition between the phenomena of La Niña and El Niño and what this could cause in the country.

And it is that El Niño, which is characterized by less rainfall, could break into the first months of the rainy season, poorly known as winter.

“That worries us because (El Niño) would be coming in when the rainy season must come in,” said Luz Graciela de Calzadilla, director of the institute.

However, the official did not want to anticipate the events and reported that the dry season that usually begins in January will not be so dry, but rather wet.

“La Niña is still present and the forecast of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States) is that we will have it until the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere,” Calzadilla reported.

This phenomenon will not have much impact on our dry season, because it is located in the south of the country, so it will not have a drastic influence, as happens in countries in South America, such as Peru.

At the moment, we are in the transition to the dry season, so sporadic rains are still expected these days, especially in the Caribbean slope, where it rains more in these months.

“We will gradually enter the dry season, typical of the months of January, February and March; in April the transition begins,” said the director of IMHPA.

Meanwhile, agricultural producers are informed, as the main victims of Climate Change, about how the climate will behave during the dry season, so that mitigation measures are taken.
