Cooperation between Panama and Cuba for the technological improvement of coconut production takes place with technical support and the collaboration of FAO
During the mission, which will last two weeks and will conclude this week, experts from the Higher Organization for Enterprise Running and the National Agricultural Sanitation Center of Cuba, together with Panamanian authorities, have exchanged information and experiences.
Cooperation includes the analysis by officials and technicians from MIDA and IDIAP, along with FAO specialists, of the measures that are implemented to control plagues and diseases that affect coconut trees in Panama, and the need to strengthen the national capacity of the crops in agroforestry plots.
In Panama, coconut production is fundamental for the economy and to feed the coastal population in the province of Colon and the indigenous community Guna Yala.
In Colon, there are 156,785 coconut trees, 112,000 in their productive stage.
