Coffee Packed in Supersacks

News from Panama / Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

In the international market acceptance has increased for shipments of coffee packaged in large one ton containers.

An article in Laprensa.hn reports that “Intercontinental Exchange, where the most amount of coffee contracts are traded in the world, announced last week that it would allow grain shipments to its certified deposits to arrive in lined cargo containers or ‘supersacks’.”

“… Cargo containers for loose grain are now being traded in the physical coffee market. But in order to be delivered using a futures contract from the ICE arabica coffee beans usually have to arrive at the deposit in bags that have been marked at the place of origin of the beans, and made of “sisal, hessian, jute yarn or materials with similar properties, ” according to the current rules.”

“… In turn, the greater flexible in packaging requirements could further reduce prices which have already been affected by an excess of Arabica beans, a variety used by U.S. roasters such as Starbucks Corp. and Italy’s IllyCaffé SpA, indicated brokers and analysts. “
