Changes to Land Titling Law

News from Panama / Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

The Panamanian government has presented for review at the National Land Council a draft bill which changes current land titling legislation.  Stay tuned to see if this really leads to anything or not.

The bill gives more power to the National Land Authority (Anati), such as a period of seven years for the role of administrator and the elimination of free titling in any of its forms.

Through these changes, the government seeks to plug loopholes left by the two existing laws.

“But sources consulted do not believe in these genuine intentions, partly because of the proposal that the general manager of Anati be designated by the Executive and ratified by the Assembly of Deputies for a period of seven years, which will start from the enactment of the law.

This would mean that the director of Anati would be in charge at least until 2019 if the bill is passed this year. Besides, only the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court could remove him from office”, reported Prensa.com
