cell block tango

What a show we had last weekend at our little community playhouse!  I was a little misty eyed when I realized that I had been coming to these shows for 8 years and the numbers that were presented in this show were from plays we had seen in the past.  My favorite vignette was the piece out of the play “Chicago” called Cell Block Tango.  Of course I am also proud that my wife Susie did the choreography for this piece.

Over 40 players were involved in putting this show on and everyone did an outstanding job.  It is great to live in this community where that many people can come together and put on such a great show.  The tag line of the BCP is “Come play with us” and they sure did this year.

A short history of a “Little Community Theater Group”.

In 2005 a small group of newcomers in their new home – Boquete, Panama- envisioned a Community Theater.  Many had never had any theater experience but, now that they were retired, thought they would like to pursue earlier dreams.  they wanted to bring “the stage” to their new community and they called themselves The Boquete Community Players, now known as “The BCP”.

For a few years they put on serious plays, comedies and musicals in any little nook and cranny they could find. For one performance, the power was out but the actors continued without loosing a beat, using flashlights, little battery lights and cell phones.  During another show, flood waters filled the venue with mud.  the Director, a local heroine, the volunteers and the Bomberos (out fire fighters) hosed and swept out all the dirt and debris so that the “show could go on”.

In 2009, BCP was offered an opportunity to rehabilitate a rundown property, taking a “sow’s ear” and turning into a “silk purse”. BCP, its volunteers and their funds did just that, creating the BCP Event Center on the banks of the Caldera River.

This is a volunteer organization whose mission is to sponsor, produce and promote artistic events to entertain, bring together and strengthen the community.  Operations are directed and overseen by the annually elected, all-volunteer BCP Council.

It is now September 2015 and the Boquete Community Players is 10 years young!  Happy Anniversary and job well done!  Thanks to all who have been along for the ride.  It could not have been done without you.

Now, BCP looks to the future….

Please “Come Play With Us!!”
