The Beef Market in Central America

In 2016 countries in the region exported 41,208 tons of beef to the US, 7% more than in 2015.

Variation of regional exports 
Between 2015 and 2016, the export value of fresh, chilled and frozen beef from Central America went down by 11%, falling from $567 million in 2015 to $506 million in 2016.

During the years in question the volume of exports grew slightly, going from 114 thousand tons in 2015 to 116 thousand tons in 2016.

Exports by country 
In 2016 the main exporter was Nicaragua with $421 million, followed by Costa Rica with $62 million, Panama with $16 million, Guatemala with $5 million and Honduras with $3 million. El Salvador did not record any significant exports.

Destination of exports 
In 2016, 32% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the US, 16% for Venezuela, 8% for Puerto Rico, 5% for Mexico and 5% for Taiwan.

Export price
Between November 2014 and December 2016, the average price of a kilo of fresh, chilled or frozen beef exported from the region fell by 22%, going from $5.34 to $4.18.
