The Plenary of the National Assembly approved in the third debate Bill 174, which creates the Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge Board, in the district of Pedasí, in the province of Los Santos.

the ATP, the Pedasí Fishermen’s Association, an environmental NGO and a foundation with research experience, among others.
The island was declared a protected area in 1981 and attracts scientists, biologists and tourists. It is home to about 5,000 frigate birds. Cetaceans such as the humpback whale is often present, although dolphins are also frequent, including the Pacific speckled dolphin (Stenella attenuata) and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).
Iguana Island is part of the wildlife refuge of the same name and, near it, on the coast, is the Pablo Arturo Barrios Wildlife Refuge.
