News from Panama / Friday, January 3rd, 2025

The Minister for Canal Affairs, José Ramón Icaza, reported that the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has reserved the necessary funds to carry out the ambitious project of the Rio Indio multipurpose reservoir.

This project, which exceeds US$ 1 billion, aims to ensure the sustainability of the Panama Canal and improve the quality of life of the communities in the affected region.

“We have the resources to carry out this work, which not only represents a reservoir for the Canal, but also an integral development for the communities. The national government will collaborate with the necessary infrastructure to ensure the well-being of Panamanians living in the area,” Icaza said.

The project includes the construction of roads, public infrastructure and the resettlement of approximately 500 to 600 families living in the area, so these actions seek to guarantee comprehensive social development, promoting the economy, progress and prosperity of the region.

Although the tender for the project does not yet have a defined date, it is expected to advance significantly in 2025, with negotiations for the resettlement of the affected families, and according to the estimated schedule, the construction of the necessary infrastructure for the reservoir could begin in 2026.

Icaza highlighted that, after years of analyzing various alternatives, the Río Indio reservoir has been determined as the most viable option. “This project is not only vital for the operation of the Channel, but also for the development of nearby communities. Río Indio represents a unique opportunity to generate economy and improve the quality of life of hundreds of families,” the minister concluded.
