I found this presentation by Harry Dent to be of interest as he paints the picture of times ahead where the baby boomer population has past it prime spending years.  Considering that the US economy is made up mostly of consumer spending (70 plus percent), it does not bode well.  He discusses the level of private debt in excess of 42 trillion dollars and deflationary projections for the future.  Even with the big Ben printing money and inflationary policies, deflation may win out.
