Farmland Values Surge as Crop Profits Allure Buyers

News from Panama / Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

I have always said that food crops will continue to dominate world markets and politics as it is a commodity that is required in life, we must eat.  Here in Chiriqui Panama where most of the fertile farmland produces meat, poultry, vegetables and fruit we have seen a sharp increase in land prices as demand has picked up.  What we must and will see here soon, is increased utilization of land and modern farming techniques that must be done in order just to feed our own population.   A case in point is that Panama only produces 50% of the whole milk that it consumes.  We are working on modeling a concentrated dairy operation and positioning 1,200 animals on the same amount of land as a range fed operation but producing double the amount of milk produced through balanced supplemental feeding of protein and fiber as is done in most other parts of the world.  This in from Bloomberg

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) — Demand for farm property in the U.S. has climbed as increased crop and livestock profits draw more buyers.  See the video here
