In his traditional weekly conference, the president indicated that at that world meeting he will reaffirm his commitment to the defense of nature and the protection of the seas of the Central American country.

He also confirmed that, together with the Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Navarro, he will soon sanction the Marrakesh Treaty, previously approved by the Cabinet Council and the National Assembly (parliament).

At the end of April, the Legislature sanctioned in a third debate that initiative adopted by the Protocol of Amendment to the Marrakesh Agreement, which establishes the World Trade Organization and the Annex to that Protocol referring to the Agreement on Subsidies for Fisheries.

The standard promotes the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources, aimed at raising the international image of Panama and highlighting its participation in international organizations that promote the Sustainable Development Goals through a positive international trade agenda.

“This agreement consolidates Panama’s position as a blue leader, which is how it is called, with more than 54 percent of our protected territorial waters,” he remarked.

Mulino also indicated that in that category territories of world importance should be included such as the Isla de Coiba National Park, a UNESCO heritage site; coral protection laws; whale defense and the signing in 2024 of the Treaty for the protection of the high seas.

The head of state explained that the Marrakech agreement prohibits harmful subsidies that contribute to the depletion of fish stocks, promoting the sustainability of the oceans and equity in the fish trade.

These global fisheries subsidies are estimated to range from $14,000 to $54 billion per year.

“These environmentalist efforts should speak very well of our country,” he added and said that he will co-chair in Nice with his French peer, Emmanuel Macron, some working tables, which strengthens the image of the isthmus in environmental issues.
