Panama will host the Inter-American Legal Committee in 2024

News from Panama / Friday, December 29th, 2023

Last week, Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), together with Ambassador María Roquebert León, Panamanian permanent representative of the State to the OAS, signed the Headquarters Agreement for the 104th Ordinary Session of the Inter-American Legal Committee (CJI).

This event is scheduled to take place in Panama City from March 11 to 15, 2024. The designation of Panama as the venue for this session of the CJI is perceived as a valuable opportunity to strengthen the technical capacities in international law of Panamanians.

A course taught by members of the CJI, aimed at state officials and university students, has been planned. This course will constitute the second edition of the CJI Update Course, which took place in October of this year in Panama City. This course was organized by the Department of International Law of the OAS and aimed at officials of the Diplomatic and Consular Career of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It should be noted that in 2022, Panama presented the candidacy of Dr. Martha Luna Veliz as a member of the CJI. After 25 years without a Panamanian occupying this relevant position, Dr. Luna Veliz was elected, thus becoming the first Panamanian woman to hold this position.
