Café geisha from Tierras Altas is auctioned at a record of $10,005 per kilo

News from Panama / Friday, September 1st, 2023

At a price never recorded in the history of the auctions of the special coffee of Panama, the lot of Carmen Estate of Paso Ancho, district of Tierras Altas (Chiriquí), managed to sell at 10 thousand 5 dollars per kilo ($10,005.00).

This has caused astonishment among connoisseurs, it is a grain of the geisha variety in the washing process. The lot in question was acquired by the company Coffee Techo Ltd of New Zealand.

This coffee, which has caused a sensation in the demanding special market, is grown on the Carmen Estate farm at a height of 1,900 meters above sea level. A production that began in 1960 and belonged to the Franceschi family, is now owned by the Chinese company Dashang Group, which maintains the care and tradition in coffee crops.

Jean Paul Langenstein, manager and representative of the company, said he was very shocked and happy because Panamanian coffee is in high demand worldwide.

For his part, Hunter Tedman, president of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP), considered that through the auction there was an excellent response from world buyers.

“Expectations have been exceeded and we find a new world record in coffee price. It is demonstrated once again the great confidence that buyers have in our producers,” Tedman said.

As far as the lot of Carmen Estate is concerned, it is a variety of geisha with a washed process, which expresses the pure form of the “terroir” of the grain, which translates into the intrinsic flavor and aroma of the geisha variety; and that together with the soil and climate conditions make the best coffees in the world to be produced in Panama, Tedman explained.

The auction began at 6:30 p.m. this Tuesday on the website https://auction.bestofpanama.org/en/lots/auction/best-of-panama-2023 where 50 lots of the best coffee produced in our country were auctioned.

Of those 50 batches of coffees, 18 correspond to natural geisha, 18 batches of geisha coffee in the washing process and 14 batches correspond to varietals.

OTHER VARIETIES GET HIGH PRICES.

It should be noted that in the lots of natural processed geisha coffee, the lot from De la Rosa Mount Totumas, located in the district of Tierras Altas, reached a price of 2,504 dollars per kilo ($2,504.00). While in the varietals the coffee of the Chicho Gallo variety of Guarumo Coffee Farm, in the Renaissance district, reached a price of 412 dollars per kilo ($412.00).

The auction took more than 15 hours in the bid and push to get the best coffee in the world.
