THE PROPERTY
RECENTLY OFFERED FOR $2.3 MILLION. NOW SELLING WITHOUT RESERVE & REGARDLESS OF HIGH BID PRICE! Known as Finca la Pagoda due to its unique, Japanese-style architectural accents, this beautiful Central American estate offers more than 34 beautiful acres in the Chiriquí province within the Panamanian Highlands. Its 3,500-ft. elevation provides for striking views of the Volcán Barú (Panama’s tallest mountain) and Pacific Ocean, in addition to the occasional “walk through the clouds.”
Interesting fact: The estate was once the summer retreat of former dictator Manuel Noriega (and also played host to various Panamanian presidents and other foreign political leaders). This likely contributed to the property’s inclusion in a 2013 Wall Street Journal article about the rising prominence of Panama and other Central American countries as havens for U.S. retirees.
With a gated entry and lush landscaping that includes orange groves and tropical gardens, Finca la Pagoda offers an environment of privacy and serenity. There are several structures on the property: the main residence, a pavilion/gazebo, gardener’s/guest quarters, a 4-car garage, greenhouse, and a large utility shed.
The main residence offers more than 6,700 sq. ft. of living space with 4 bedrooms and 4 full baths. The gourmet kitchen features a 5-burner gas range and an oversized refrigerator/freezer, in addition to a large pantry and laundry area. There is also a library, formal dining room, family and living rooms, and a study. The upper floor is entirely occupied by the oversized master suite, which offers beautiful views to the city of David, the vibrant capital of Chiriquí.
Other features of the main residence include restored, original wood ceilings, terrazzo floors imported from Cuba, and a wooden parquet staircase.
The estate’s 1,409-sq.-ft. pavilion is an excellent venue for relaxation, cooking for friends, or family fun. There is a kitchenette, 2 half baths, a large wet bar, and ample storage. Restored wood ceilings and terrazzo floors are also featured here. The pavilion has hosted as many as 70 guests.
A separate gardener’s/guesthouse can easily accommodate domestic staff or additional guests, with 2 bedrooms and 1 full bath. Lovely gardens surround the guesthouse.
The property also features a fully zoned irrigation system, which services all of the gardens and the greenhouse. In addition, Finca la Pagoda possesses permanent water concession rights (an extremely rare feature), and has its own auxiliary electrical plant that can provide power to the entire property.
THE LOCATION
CHIRIQUÍ PROVINCE, PANAMA. The Chiriquí province is home to an amazing variety of attractions, which include beaches, islands, rivers for white water rafting and kayaking, high-altitude mountains for hiking and climbing, lush tropical forests which host exotic flora and fauna, and lively cities such as David, the capital of the province. Chiriquí is located in the western region of Panama, with Costa Rica forming its western border and the Pacific Ocean to its south. Its particularly unique terrain gives Chiriquí an ideal climate for agriculture. The Highland areas, including Boquete and Volcán, are gifted with fertile soil. This soil and climate tandem allows for abundant harvests of coffee, oranges, strawberries and vegetables every year.
The province is also home to the Volcán Barú, a dormant volcano and also the tallest mountain in Panama, measuring 11,398 feet (or 3,474 meters) above sea level. It towers above the surrounding landscape and is one of the only places in the world where one can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time with the naked eye. The soils on the slopes of the volcano are famous for their fertility, and the cool, wet climate of this area makes it Panama’s most agriculturally productive.
Chiriquí offers much more than just agriculture and natural beauty, however. It’s capital city, David, is a center for commerce, and offers a rather robust “city living” experience for its residents and visitors. Located in the western Lowlands, the city is a gateway to many of Chiriquí’s attractions, including the Gulf of Chiriquí with its many islands, and the mountainous Highlands region, where the weather is cooler and the forests are strikingly green and lush.
David has become a popular destination for expats, as they’ve discovered its convenience, affordability, and developed infrastructure, in addition to its lower cost of living as compared to bustling Panama City. David is conveniently located just off the Pan-American Highway, and is also home to Chiriquí’s international airport (DAV).
