One of the routes is operated by Maersk Line from Asia to the US West Coast and the other by the company Hamburg Sud, going from South America to the Caribbean.
The Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano, said these two new services will generate “between $25 million to $30 million each.” Vessels operating the routes are of medium size and will start going through the canal in the coming months.
Thebulletinpanama.com reports that “…A few years ago the shipping company Maersk withdrew one of the services on the Panama route; on asking Quijano if this is a return by the same company, he explained that “in essence”, he assumed that this is related to problems on the East Coast in the United States where there are currently some “congestion” and he thinks the shipping route through Panama complements their services. ”
“… Since October 2014 (beginning of fiscal year) to March 2015 the number of transits through the Panama Canal totalled 2,008 , which represents 257 transits more compared with the first half of 2014. “
