Nicole Quint will face challenging workloads and a steep learning curve when she travels to La Venta, Panama in August with Global Medical Brigade.

Quint is studying chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and plans to apply to the university’s dental school this summer.

In Panama, she will assist dentists providing oral health care and educating the population of 200, who live on $2 a day.

Each year Medical Global Brigade mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in nine skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

“A huge reason why I want to pursue a career in dentistry is that I enjoy the opportunity it gives me to make an impact on individuals and communities,” Quint said.

“And I would like to enhance my knowledge on how people live, survive, communicate, celebrate and grieve in another country.”

Quint is the daughter of Frank and Andrea Quint, and graduated from Crown Point High School in 2012.

On campus she serves as president of the IUPUI Pre-Dental Club and this fall will volunteer as a Science Ambassador for the school. “I will educate pre-science majors about what IUPUI has to offer, such as research opportunities, jobs, degrees, and what to expect as a science student,” she said.

“I have also demonstrated my commitment to helping others through volunteering over 100 hours of my time to various organizations throughout the past three years of my undergraduate career.”
