{"id":36061,"date":"2024-08-30T23:39:29","date_gmt":"2024-08-31T04:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=36061"},"modified":"2024-08-30T23:39:29","modified_gmt":"2024-08-31T04:39:29","slug":"costa-rica-vows-to-help-panama-exit-tax-haven-blacklists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/costa-rica-vows-to-help-panama-exit-tax-haven-blacklists\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa Rica Vows to Help Panama Exit Tax Haven Blacklists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, promised this Friday to help Panama get off the blacklists of tax havens, now that his country will preside over the summit of ministers of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).Panama has been accused of being a tax haven, which has led to the country being placed on various lists, including one from the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur commitment is to support Panama on its route to being a player in the Premier League of the world economy [\u2026] and we have put ourselves at their disposal,\u201d Chaves told journalists alongside his Panamanian counterpart, Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino, at the end of a visit to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCosta Rica will soon assume the presidency of the OECD, and we have expressed our interest in their support as president of that organization on the whole issue of excluding Panama from the lists of different colors where we are and have been,\u201d said Mulino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costa Rica, which has been part of the OECD since 2021, will chair the bloc\u2019s ministerial meeting in 2025 in Paris, the organization\u2019s headquarters. \u201cIt is not fair and it is an insult to Panama to keep us on that list of low-connotation countries. We are immensely grateful for that support [promised by Chaves],\u201d added the Panamanian president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mulino stated that once \u201cCosta Rica is at the forefront\u201d of the OECD, he will travel to Europe \u201cvisiting whoever needs to be visited\u201d to remove Panama from \u201cany discriminatory mechanism.\u201d The country\u2019s reputation hit rock bottom after the \u201cPanama Papers\u201d scandal, an investigation that revealed in 2016 how secret societies were created for personalities from around the world from a Panamanian law firm, some of which served to evade taxes or launder money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, successive Panamanian governments have rejected these accusations and have threatened to adopt sanctions against countries and organizations that keep Panama on such lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/panamaperspective.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cPanama Papers,\u201d\u00a0<\/a>high-ranking officials in several countries had to resign and others were convicted. After the scandal, Panama carried out legal reforms, including the criminalization of tax evasion, which was not previously a crime. These changes allowed the country to exit the \u201cgrey list\u201d of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), based in Paris, in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chaves, the first foreign president to visit Mulino since he took office on July 1, said that \u201cPanama\u2019s reputation (\u2026) is beginning to spread in different international organizations,\u201d because \u201ccontracts are fulfilled\u201d and there are \u201cclear rules\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div
