European Parliament to open office in Panama"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move means EU body will have staff in Africa, Asia and the Americas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Parliament decided this week to open an office in Panama in coordination with the European External Action Service, according to a confidential note seen by POLITICO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The senior MEPs who make up the Parliament\u2019s bureau signed off on the move in a meeting behind closed doors on Monday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParliament staff would be seconded to the EU delegation in Panama,\u201d according to the note. The bureau endorsed a plan to set up what it called an \u201cantenna office\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/panamaperspective.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back in the summer<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and chose Panama as a location on Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An official from a right-wing group in the Parliament, who requested anonymity, said her only comment was: \u201cWhat for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow the race starts to see who manages to get his candidate on the post!\u201d said another political operative in the Parliament.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panama is the home of the&nbsp;<em>Parlatino<\/em>, a consultative body covering Latin America, and was therefore considered the \u201cmost suitable\u201d location by the bureau, per the note. Part of its function will be \u201cproviding support to Parliament\u2019s political bodies visiting the region,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Parliament has already opened offices outside the EU in Jakarta, Addis Ababa, and New York. In November, MEPs decided to open a representation office in the Ukrainian parliament, with one Parliament staffer to be seconded to Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spanish MEP Iratxe Garc\u00eda praised the move to open a Panama office as \u201cgood news,\u201d saying it should be used to promote parliamentary ties between Latin America and the European Union. The leading Socialist and Democrats MEP said: \u201cI always said it was very important for Europe to look to Latin America as a region where we have major opportunities to tighten cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberts Z?le, a vice president of the Parliament from Latvia, said the decision in favor of opening the office in Panama had been unanimous. In similar offices elsewhere there is only \u201cone person\u201d from the Parliament, meaning the cost should not be significant compared to the EU Parliament\u2019s \u20ac2 billion annual budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe European Union needs a lot of rare earth metals \u2026 in particular for the Green Deal,\u201d he said, arguing Latin America is an important continent for the EU politically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right-wing MEP Roberts Z?le, who intends to run for a fifth Parliament term, said those really wanting to save costs should look at the expensive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/visiting.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/visitor-offer\/other-locations\/europa-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Europa Experience<\/a>&nbsp;project, which is trying to build a visitor center concerning the Parliament in every EU capital. \u201cThis is a bigger opportunity to save money,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Parliament\u2019s press service said: \u201cThe EU has association, trade or political and cooperation agreements with 27 of the 33 LAC countries, making it the region with the closest institutional ties to the EU. The representation will also contribute strengthening the cooperation with the EEAS as well as other international organisations and civil society, raising awareness on Parliament\u2019s activities and providing support to Parliament\u2019s political bodies visiting the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size has-small-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/hats-off-to-eu-european-parliament-open-office-panama\/\">Source<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The move means EU body will have staff in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
