It&#8217;s more involved than digging a long trench at the shortest point, which is the Isthmus of Panama. First, the sea level of the Caribbean is eight inches lower than the Pacific. Second, the two oceans have different tides. First, the locks lift the vessels up to Gatun Lake, and then they lower them through three more locks back down to sea level. In 1904, the United States bought the Canal Zone because it wanted to\u00a0expand its shipping and naval power\u00a0between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It paid $10 million to Panama and $40 million to France. U.S. engineers decided a canal lock would protect ships from landslides in the Andes Mountains, and U.S. doctors found treatments for the tropical diseases of malaria and yellow fever.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p>In 1914, the Panama Canal was completed after costing $375 million.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-10\">3<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-9\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The United States owned the canal inside the country of Panama, but in 1977, President Carter signed a treaty that promised to\u00a0turn the canal over in 1999.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">4<\/span> The agreement allowed the United States to intervene anytime that its use of the canal was threatened. By that time, the canal cost more to run than it returned in profit to American companies; railroads were much faster, and their costs had fallen. The treaty also improved relations with Panama and the rest of Latin America, but many Americans saw it as an American retreat from its global power.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-12\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block money-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Canal Expansion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The\u00a0expanded Panama Canal opened\u00a0on June 26, 2016. The expansion added a new third lane, which doubled the canal&#8217;s capacity.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-5\">5<\/span> Most importantly, it accommodated Neopanamax ships. Each one is 1,200 feet long and carries three times the cargo of 965-foot-long Panamax ships.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-6\">6<\/span> At least\u00a05,000 Neopanamax\u00a0ships went through the canal between 2016\u20132018.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-7\">7<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-17\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block money-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">How the Expanded Canal Affects You<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-19\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The expanded Panama Canal keeps the cost of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/imports-definition-examples-effect-on-economy-3305851\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">imported<\/a>\u00a0goods down, which lowers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/what-is-inflation-how-it-s-measured-and-managed-3306170\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">inflation<\/a>. These are the top five U.S. ports as of 2019:<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<ol id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Port of Los Angeles<\/li>\n<li>Port of Long Beach<\/li>\n<li>Port Authority of New York &amp; New Jersey<\/li>\n<li>Port of Savannah<\/li>\n<li>Northwest Seaport Alliance (Seattle\/Tacoma)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-25\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Among the top 25 inbound ports in North America, U.S. ports led with 73.6 percent of the total North American trade.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-8\">8<\/span> Not only does the canal create more U.S. jobs, but the expansion also makes the U.S. transportation system run more efficiently. For example, it relieves congestion at the LA\/LB port\u2014where most of the traffic comes from Asia\u2014and it&#8217;s given\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/exports-definition-examples-effect-on-economy-3305838\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">U.S. exporters<\/a>\u00a0better access to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/china-economy-facts-effect-on-us-economy-3306345\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">China<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/world-economy-4073936\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Asian markets<\/a>. It&#8217;s become\u00a0cheaper to ship through the Canal\u00a0than ship to Los Angeles and move through goods by rail and truck.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-26\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-27\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block money-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">How the Canal Lowers Shipping Costs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-29\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The fastest way to get cargo from China to the U.S. East Coast is by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/Impact%20of%20Panama%20Canal%20Expansion%20on%20the%20U.S.%20Intermodal%20System.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">ship and rail<\/a>, which takes 18.3 days, including 12.3 days to go from China to the U.S. West Coast. Cargo on a train takes six days from the West Coast to the East Coast, and for this reason, 75% of Asian imports take this route. Before the expansion, only 19% of cargo ships from Asia took the Panama Canal route because it took 21.6 days. The remaining 6% of China&#8217;s trade to America goes through the Suez Canal in Egypt, which takes 21.1 days.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-9\">9<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-30\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-32\" class=\"comp text-passage mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The canal\u2019s expansion makes this longer route more profitable for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/what-are-commodities-3306236\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">commodities<\/a>\u00a0exporters who need to cut costs more than they need to reduce time.\u00a0The expansion will also open the Asian market for U.S. natural gas exporters. Before the expansion, the canal was too small for liquefied natural gas ships.
