{"id":31291,"date":"2021-05-04T10:13:40","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=31291"},"modified":"2021-05-04T10:13:40","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:13:40","slug":"panamas-plan-go-green-reforest-1-million-hectares-2050","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/panamas-plan-go-green-reforest-1-million-hectares-2050\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama&#8217;s plan to go green and reforest 1 million hectares by 2050"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/going-green.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31294\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/going-green.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/going-green.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/going-green-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Panama has experienced the impacts of climate change, from flooding and landslides caused by torrential rains to hurricanes that killed 20 people last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--list\">\n<ul>\n<li>Rainforests cover 65% of Panama, but between 2012 to 2019 the country lost around 2% of its forest per year.<\/li>\n<li>Officials are now taking steps to combat forest losses.<\/li>\n<li>Logging permits granted by the environment ministry have been suspended, and satellite and drone surveillance has increased.<\/li>\n<li>Panama aims to reforest 1 million hectares by 2050.<\/li>\n<li>Businesses can now get tax breaks for solar and wind power equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Panama also plans to shift to electric buses and government cars, while cutting the use of petrol cars by at least 30% over the next decade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Deforestation rates in Panama are set to show a decline as the Central American nation ramps up its efforts to stop the illegal logging of forests largely driven by the expansion of agriculture, environment minister Milciades Concepcion said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Panama boasts one of the highest levels of forest cover in Central America, with rainforests on about 65% of its land, as well as mangrove and cloud forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--searchable-list st__content-block--searchable-list-default list-group\" data-gtm-subcontext=\"body__list\">\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>But expansion of farming and cattle ranching, along with &#8220;abuse&#8221; of logging permits, threaten Panama&#8217;s forest and have led to rising deforestation rates in recent years, Concepcion said in a video interview.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Panama lost nearly 2% of its forest cover from 2012 to 2019 &#8211; the equivalent of about 8,000 hectares (19,768 acres) a year &#8211; according to government figures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a cultural aspect to this,&#8221; Concepcion told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. &#8220;Many people in rural areas live off this (logging) and it&#8217;s not easy from one day to the next to get deforestation down to zero.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>To that end, logging permits granted by the environment ministry have been suspended for the past year and a half, and monitoring by police and border patrols and the use of drones and satellite imagery have increased, said the agronomist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>&#8220;Citizens are also increasingly reporting environmental crimes,&#8221; he said.
