{"id":31092,"date":"2021-03-30T09:10:46","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T14:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=31092"},"modified":"2021-03-31T10:32:46","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T15:32:46","slug":"health-concerns-lead-panama-put-5g-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/health-concerns-lead-panama-put-5g-hold\/","title":{"rendered":"Did health concerns lead Panama to put 5G on hold?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/5g-world.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31093\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/5g-world.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/5g-world.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/5g-world-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Misbeliefs and conspiracy theories could be the main obstacles to 5G deployment in Panama, where launch plans are still on hold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriticisms of the adverse effects of new wireless technologies can have adverse effects by delaying their deployment or, in extreme cases,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/features\/why-cellular-antennas-are-being-burned-taken-down-in-latin-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0inciting damage<\/a>\u00a0to the telecommunications infrastructure deployed,\u201d Jos\u00e9 Otero, VP for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/company-profile\/5g-americas-llc-5g-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5G Americas<\/a>\u00a0in Latin America, told BNamericas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the immediate consequences that ignorance can cause is that the municipalities, which are the ones with the power to grant authorizations for the deployment of infrastructure in their territory, reject the authorization requests for the placement of telecommunications antennas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Panama announced plans to reassign frequencies\u00a0to prepare for 5G\u00a0in October 2019. But public services regulator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/company-profile\/autoridad-nacional-de-los-servicios-publicos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asep<\/a>\u00a0backpedaled in May last year as rumors about a disease caused by the technology spread.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the regulator said it had not authorized 5G, nor received requests from operators related to implementation and infrastructure deployment. Asep also said it was working on identifying new bands to guarantee the \u201chealthy\u201d rollout of the networks.<\/p>\n<p>But a\u00a05G\u00a0band had already been identified and announced.<\/p>\n<p>In a decree published on the official gazette in October 2019, Asep said it had identified the 1,427-1,518MHz band, known as the L band, as suitable for the new technology, adding it would reassign frequencies to grant all operators 91MHz of spectrum for easing the launch of 5G.<\/p>\n<p>Concessionaires of the L band had been given 12 months to free it, but updates were not reported since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is Panama ready?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mistrust toward cellular antennas was not considered an obstacle three years ago when Otero talked about 5G in Panama. At a seminar, he told Asep that Latin America\u2019s biggest challenges toward the next\u00a0generation\u00a0of\u00a0cellular\u00a0technology were infrastructure and the role of operators, according to a statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/analysis\/spotlight-the-status-of-panamas-telecom-and-broadcasting-sectors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotlight: The status of Panama\u2019s telecom and broadcasting sectors<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/webflyer\/technology-and-innovation-report-2021\">report<\/a>\u00a0put Panama in the top 10 of the best positioned countries in the region to adopt \u201cfrontier technologies\u201d like 5G.<\/p>\n<p>According to the index which was put together by the UN conference on trade and development (Unctad), Panama ranked behind Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The government has not commented on the delayed 5G plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Debunking the myth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), evidence of health risks linked to\u00a0exposure to radio frequencies, including 5G, is scarce. The entity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/radiation-5g-mobile-networks-and-health\">will publish<\/a>\u00a0a thorough report in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, telecom manufacturers such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/company-profile\/ericsson-telecom-sa-de-cv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ericsson<\/a>\u00a0have completed their own assessments.<\/p>\n<p>The company told BNamericas that several international reports \u201cconsistently concluded that there is no evidence of any health effects associated with exposure to radio waves from mobile phones or radio base stations,\u201d and that 5G networks use the same standards as regular 3G and 4G networks and devices.<\/p>\n<p>It added, \u201cwe can assure that 5G is the most secure mobile network generation that exists because it integrates security standards from the beginning as part of the standardization process. This is crucial as 5G will be critical infrastructure,\u201d adding that discrediting fake news is crucial for the 5G rollout.<\/p>\n<p>Stay Safe!!<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wpcf7 no-js\"
