The video lasts only 11 seconds, but it provides a valuable glimpse at this iconic animal of the Central American forests.<\/p>\n<p>The camera trap that captured this video is one of 75 that have been installed in the Mamon\u00ed Valley by the Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative, which is leading a study on the habitat and ecology of the jaguar (<em>Panthera onca<\/em>). The project also aims to determine the density of the jaguar population in this part of the Isthmus of Panama.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hr3venGkt04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31018\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/night-jag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/night-jag.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/night-jag-300x248.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The surprising roar of a jaguar can be heard in this camera trap video. During the four years that these conserved forests in the Mamon\u00ed Valley have been monitored, two melanistic jaguars have been recorded on video. Melanism is a genetic variation in which the bodies of some individuals of certain species have more melanin, giving them a black color. In jaguars and leopards, such individuals are better known as black panthers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_wPDBeBjg4s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31019\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/jag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/jag.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/jag-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Videos recorded by camera traps show a variety of wildlife. Additionally, I know of another three records of melanistic jaguars that have been reported by biologists in the country,\u201d says Kimberly Craighead, president and co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kaminando.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative<\/a>. The\u00a0project spans more than 22,000 hectares (54,400 acres), about the size of metro Boston, including protected areas in the Mamon\u00ed Valley.<\/p>\n<h3>Studying melanistic jaguars<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOur hypothesis is that melanism occurs more frequently in humid forests. We have followed a female melanistic jaguar for several years. Image courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Craighead says the habitat of jaguars in Panama is fragmented and that the species is exposed to illegal hunting and the trafficking of body parts. \u201cPanama is not an exception to the threats,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Craighead and her Kaminando co-founder, Milton Yacelga,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/41977728\/Yacelga_and_Craighead_2019_Melanistic_jaguars_in_Panama_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">published the results<\/a>\u00a0of their camera trap observations in the IUCN\u2019s Cat Specialist Group publication\u00a0<em>Cat News<\/em>\u00a0in 2019. The first of three key findings is that melanistic and non-melanistic jaguars move around within the same environment. One of the camera traps captured an image of two jaguars, one of them melanistic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"iframe-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ftByDNWpR4k\" width=\"560\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The camera traps have also captured images of other species living in the forests of Panama. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second finding is that non-melanistic jaguars are more active during the day, while melanistic jaguars appear more frequently at night. \u201c[N]octurnal activity may have adaptive relevance in the cloud forest,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The third finding from Craighead and Yacelga\u2019s observations is that melanistic jaguars don\u2019t have a clear preference for a particular type of forest: both primary and secondary forests exist in the study area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_221256\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-221256 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/11\/22234212\/Black-Jaguar-Kaminando-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">So far, two melanistic jaguars have been recorded in the area being studied in Panama. Image courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A final point in the study concludes that melanism is strongly associated with particular environmental factors, such as humidity, forest density, and temperature. Therefore, they posit, the distribution of melanism is not random.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Luis Mena, director of the species initiative at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in Peru, says melanistic jaguars have also been found in Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Costa Rica. \u201cIt is part of the genetic variability of jaguars. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mena also references a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/books\/big-cats\/ecology-and-evolution-of-melanism-in-big-cats-case-study-with-black-leopards-and-jaguars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">2017 chapter<\/a>\u00a0by Brazilian researcher Lucas Gon\u00e7alves da Silva in the book\u00a0<em>Big Cats<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the conclusions of that study is that melanism in jaguars \u201cwas totally absent from open and periodically flooded landscapes.\u201d In forested areas, however, melanistic jaguars were found to make up 10% of the population, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"iframe-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kl4YliUpcLc\" width=\"560\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The forests on the Isthmus of Panama are home to a high level of biodiversity. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gon\u00e7alves da Silva\u2019s study points in a similar direction to that of Craighead and Yacelga. \u201cThe analyses of the environmental predictors suggest a relevant role for factors such as moisture and temperature. These observations support the hypothesis that melanism in big cats is not a neutral polymorphism (influenced by natural selection), leading to a nonrandom geographic distribution of this coloration phenotype,\u201d the chapter concludes.<\/p>\n<h3>A forest filled with biodiversity<\/h3>\n<p>Gabriel Salazar has worked with the Kaminando project for three years and was one of the people responsible for installing the camera traps in the Mamon\u00ed Valley. On more than one occasion, he has seen the wild cats that inhabit the forest. His most vivid memory is of a particular night when, while camping in the forest and accompanying a scientist, he found himself in front of a jaguar that was observing him.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"iframe-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i065k653dOo\" width=\"560\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Tayras walk in front of a camera trap. I turned on my flashlight and there it was: a big jaguar on a rock, staring at me intently,\u201d Salazar says. \u201cI started to call the professor; I wanted him to take photos. He was petrified and told me to get away, and that the jaguar was going to get me. But I kept watching it; several minutes had already passed before the professor realized what was happening. If it had wanted to attack me, it would have done so from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salazar has come across other wild cats while walking through the forests of Panama, where he is now a tour guide. He had an equally close encounter with a puma (<em>Puma concolor<\/em>), which he followed on foot for about 50 meters (164 feet). \u201cEvery time I stopped, the puma also stopped walking,\u201d Salazar says.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"iframe-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NwAl3hjtx7E\" width=\"560\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Five feline species inhabit the forests on the Isthmus of Panama. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Salazar says he has learned to live alongside the animals, but before installing the camera traps, he was afraid of big cats. \u201cOur grandparents told us that the jaguars and pumas could eat us, but when I started to live with them, I realized that was a lie. They do not attack,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the big cats, Salazar has also seen anteaters, tapirs, and peccaries. He has only seen melanistic jaguars in images obtained by the camera traps. \u201cOnce, three jaguars went past, one after another. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Kaminando project\u2019s camera traps have registered five species of wild cats found in Panama \u2014 jaguar, puma, ocelot (<em>Leopardus pardalis<\/em>), margay (<em>Leopardus wiedii<\/em>) and jaguarondi (<em>Herpailurus yagouaroundi<\/em>) \u2014 in addition to 31 species of wild mammals.<\/p>\n<p>Craighead says the Kaminando research aims to explain how elements of the landscape influence the presence, dispersion, and density of the jaguars. All of this abundance is surrounded by highly degraded areas. \u201cThere is a lot of pressure from human activity in the area adjacent to our study area,\u201d Craighead says.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"iframe-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H8-q2BhbJFc\" width=\"560\" height=\"515\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>External pressures put at risk the habitat of the jaguar and other species in Panama\u2019s forests. Video courtesy of Kaminando\u2014Habitat Connectivity Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanama is a country with a lot of commercial activity and many roads, and a consequence of that is the loss of the jaguars\u2019 habitat,\u201d says Mena, who also heads the Department of Zoology at the Vera Alleman Haeghebaert Museum of Natural History at Ricardo Palma University in Peru.<\/p>\n<p>Mena says there are at least four subpopulations of jaguars in Panama, one of which lives on the border with Costa Rica. \u201cPanama is one of the countries with a critically threatened jaguar population,\u201d he says.
