Tamara Ilic have tried to fly home on numerous occasions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"class\"><strong>Their flights have been cancelled and the couple say they are at their wit&#8217;s end<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"class\"><strong><strong>Neither of them have ever sailed before and the voyage will take four months<\/strong><\/strong>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">An Australian couple stranded in Central America by the\u00a0<a id=\"mol-95039aa0-7ed4-11eb-94fd-f14da01f5f0c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/coronavirus\/index.html\">Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic are trying to sail 14,000km home after their flights were repeatedly cancelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a id=\"mol-950177c0-7ed4-11eb-94fd-f14da01f5f0c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/brisbane\/index.html\">Brisbane<\/a>\u00a0couple Jake Shepherd and Tamara Ilic will embark on the four-month voyage across the Pacific Ocean after exhausting all other options to leave Panama &#8211; even though they&#8217;ve never sailed a boat before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They tried to fly out of the country three times and contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs and Australian embassies in other countries for assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ms Ilic said nobody answered their several calls for help to get home.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/03\/06\/22\/40129722-9334037-image-a-11_1615070274950.jpg\" alt=\"Ms Ilic and Mr Shepherd have decided to take matters into their own hands and set sail for Brisbane (pictured, the boat the pair intend to sail from Panama to Brisbane)\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only thing we&#8217;ve received back is one automated email which wasn&#8217;t helpful so that&#8217;s why we started looking into alternative ways to get home,&#8217; she told the Today show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Australia closed its international borders in March 17, 2020, and will keep them cshut until at least June 17, and likely until October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Travellers are barred from arriving in the country while Australians can&#8217;t leave without an exemption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are still 40,000 Australians stranded overseas and only NSW, Western Australian, and Queensland are accepting a handful of travellers a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Airlines have reduced the number of passengers allowed on the flights and gouged ticket prices to cover the cost of almost empty flights coming in to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Economy tickets are almost always cancelled and remaining business class seats often go to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ms Ilic and Mr Shepherd travel the world and record their globetrotting adventures online under the name &#8216;Lockdown Travellers&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The pair were travelling through Central America when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They tried to leave the country three times by air, but had their flights cancelled at the last minute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ms Ilic and Mr Shepherd instead decided to take matters into their own hands and will set sail for Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">he couple scoured the internet and social media groups looking for captains who are looking for extra crew and help on deck in return for safe travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They say they feel confident they have found a captain who has enough experience to get them safely home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ms Ilic also admitted they have some reservations about sailing across the ocean for four months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Jake&#8217;s a little scared of sharks,&#8217; Ms Ilic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I&#8217;ve got a healthy fear of sharks, I&#8217;d like to
