Kurt wrote a book that I highly recommend on his rescue called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Six-Minutes-Freedom-Kurt-Muse\/dp\/0806528044\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=Six+Minutes+to+Freedom&amp;qid=1609776917&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Six Minutes to Freedom<\/a>&#8221; which will be a movie one day.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"summary-list\">\n<li>In the early morning hours of December 20, 1989, Delta Force operators descended on a Panamanian prison holding CIA operative Kurt Muse.<\/li>\n<li>The operation, conducted at the outset of the US invasion of Panama, brought Muse home safely, becoming Delta Force&#8217;s first successful hostage-rescue mission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Old partner, new enemy<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"figure image-figure-image \" data-type=\"img\" data-e2e-name=\"image-figure-image\" data-media-container=\"image\">\n<div class=\"lazy-holder \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-image js-queued js-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/592d710d79474c21008b4fcb?width=600&amp;format=jpeg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Manuel Noriega\" data-content-type=\"image\/jpeg\" data-srcs=\"{&quot;https:\/\/i.insider.com\/592d710d79474c21008b4fcb&quot;:{&quot;contentType&quot;:&quot;image\/jpeg&quot;,&quot;aspectRatioW&quot;:1500,&quot;aspectRatioH&quot;:991}}\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"lazy-holder \"><\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption headline-bold\" data-e2e-name=\"image-caption\">Gen. He had been a longtime CIA associate but was also known for drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>After the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/panamanian-dictator-manuel-noriegas-complex-us-ties-lessons\/story?id=47722429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"20\" data-uri=\"082996f174fc5e1a0eecf7771880b85c\">Iran-Contra operation<\/a>\u00a0was exposed, Noriega&#8217;s utility to the US diminished.<\/p>\n<p>As relations between the two countries deteriorated, Noriega went on the offensive, arresting Kurt Muse \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1991\/05\/02\/us-sought-premise-for-using-military-in-panama\/0a5e5a53-3e18-460a-a74d-8656d26ef118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"20\" data-uri=\"f2436902347e225069411287a62a8431\">a CIA operative<\/a>\u00a0who owned a publishing company in Panama \u2014 on espionage charges and threatening to execute him.<\/p>\n<p>Noriega kept Muse in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1996\/12\/06\/world\/with-a-bang-panama-is-erasing-house-of-horrors.html\" target=\"_top\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"40\" data-uri=\"d78951f1e6f769b16f2a9f9e8cd70d6f\">squalid and overcrowded<\/a>\u00a0Modelo Prison. The prison was in downtown Panama City, close to the Comandancia, which was Panama&#8217;s Pentagon, and within sight of US Southern Command headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, Noriega told Muse that he would be killed on the spot if there was a rescue attempt. From him, they learned where Muse was located and the general layout of the building.<\/p>\n<p>The final plan was to land on the roof, breach the rooftop door, and descend two floors to reach Muse&#8217;s cell. The assault force would then fly away on the Little Birds with their precious cargo.<\/p>\n<p>Delta Force&#8217;s 2 Troop, A Squadron, was given the task of rescuing Muse. Col. Eldon Bargewell,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/legendary-leaders-who-transformed-us-military-special-operations-units-2020-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"60\" data-uri=\"a237c5b9ed0032409991a753398a8c9b\">a legendary commando<\/a>\u00a0and A Squadron&#8217;s commanding officer, was the operation&#8217;s overall commander.<\/p>\n<p>In the months prior to the mission, the Delta operators practiced the mission multiple times. But it proved to be an ordinary door, and the blast from the charge shook the whole building.<\/p>\n<p>As the rescue team entered the prison, they encountered some resistance, killing two guards and cuffing another who was unarmed and offered no resistance, displaying the target discretion that Delta is known for even in the most chaotic situations.<\/p>\n<p>At the cell, &#8220;the guys had to blow Kurt&#8217;s door with another charge,&#8221; a Delta veteran told Insider. &#8220;They told him to hide in his little bathroom area so he wouldn&#8217;t be blown to pieces by the flying door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an operator who had roped down from the roof was hanging outside Muse&#8217;s cell window to ensure that the guard who was supposed to kill Muse was neutralized, but that precaution ended up not being necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Once inside the cell, the Delta operators gave Muse a helmet, body armor, and goggles for protection before heading back to the MH-6s.<\/p>\n<p>Only six minutes had passed between when the Delta operators landed on the roof and the moment they called in the orbiting helicopters for extract \u2014 &#8220;six minutes that lasted an eternity,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1996\/12\/06\/world\/with-a-bang-panama-is-erasing-house-of-horrors.html\" target=\"_top\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"80\" data-uri=\"d78951f1e6f769b16f2a9f9e8cd70d6f\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time.<\/p>\n<h2>It ain&#8217;t over till it&#8217;s over<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"figure image-figure-image \" data-type=\"img\" data-e2e-name=\"image-figure-image\" data-media-container=\"image\">\n<div class=\"lazy-holder \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-image js-queued js-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/5feb5abda644880018193a22?width=600&amp;format=jpeg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Acid Gambit helicopter\" data-content-type=\"image\/jpeg\" data-srcs=\"{&quot;https:\/\/i.insider.com\/5feb5abda644880018193a22&quot;:{&quot;contentType&quot;:&quot;image\/jpeg&quot;,&quot;aspectRatioW&quot;:200,&quot;aspectRatioH&quot;:133}}\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption headline-bold\" data-e2e-name=\"image-caption\">The downed MH-6 Little Bird that carried Muse.\u00a0<\/figcaption><span class=\"image-source-caption \"><span class=\"image-source headline-regular\" data-e2e-name=\"image-source\">American Helicopter Museum<\/span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>An MH-6 Little Bird took off with Muse from the roof but immediately dropped straight to the ground because of the weight. The Night Stalker pilots managed to level the bird and &#8220;drive&#8221; down a street before landing in a graveyard.<\/p>\n<p>As the battered MH-6 tried to take off again, it came under withering enemy fire. One operator was hit in the chest and fell out of the chopper 20 feet to the ground, as did another one who tried to grab him.<\/p>\n<p>The Little Bird crashed-landed, wounding the other two operators. A few minutes later, armored personnel carriers, carrying Delta operators and medics from the main invasion force, rescued them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure image-figure-image \" data-type=\"img\" crash and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/story-of-first-special-ops-mission-afghanistan-after-911-attacks-2020-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"100\" data-uri=\"964e005953d40f488be05cbe4030fdf0\">deploy again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite his wounds, &#8216;Conan&#8217; continued to serve in the Unit, even graduating from the Combat Diver school, hands down one of toughest special operations courses in the Army,&#8221; a Delta operator who served with Sudderth told Insider, using Sudderth&#8217;s nickname.<\/p>\n<div id=\"gpt-post-defense-desktop_in_post_ad-desktop-9\" class=\"ad ad-wrapper fluid in-post only-desktop is-collapsible height-250\" data-bi-ad=\"\" safety.<\/p>\n<p>Delta had participated in the failed rescue of Americans held hostage in Iran in 1980, which led to changes to the special-operations command structure and the creation of the Night Stalkers.<\/p>\n<p>With Muse&#8217;s successful rescue almost 10 years later, the ghosts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-failed-iran-hostage-rescue-raid-influenced-us-special-forces-2020-9\" target=\"_top\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"100\" data-uri=\"5429eed52dfdc5e99a2090776ab55c34\">Desert One<\/a>\u00a0were laid to rest.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><em>Stavros Atlamazoglou is a defense journalist
