The fact that there are now TWO major providers is very good news for us as consumers, since the competition will push them to keep lower prices and better customer service.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0d64\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The decision may come down to which one provides the more desirable TV and streaming packages. During the Covid crisis, Cable Onda will come to your house to pick it up.<\/li>\n<li id=\"4af9\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">If I go on vacation, can I suspend the service?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes \u2014 call customer service and they will suspend the service for a nominal monthly fee<\/li>\n<li id=\"7b7a\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">How can I pay my bill?<\/strong><br \/>\nAutomatic withdrawl from your credit card is easiest. For month by month, you can pay +Movil at their office in Boquete and you can pay for Cable Onda at Romero\u2019s.<br \/>\n&#8211; If you miss a payment, your service may be reduced but you will not be left without a connection.<br \/>\n* Note: If you have Cable Onda wireless service from Volcan Baru, your service may be disconnected for non-payment. Cable Onda is in the process of merging with Tigo, so policies may change.<\/li>\n<li id=\"255f\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Where are their offices?<br \/>\n+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0has an office in Boquete directly across from the Dollar Store on the first floor of the new shopping center. Their agent, Bilhany, speaks perfect English and is very, very helpful. In the afternoon, their office is usually not as busy.<br \/>\n<strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda<\/strong>\u00a0is currently located in David. You can find them on Waze or a map. Tigo, which has purchased Cable Onda, has an office in Boquete for cellular telephone service (they also bought Moviestar), but not yet for internet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1 id=\"30be\" class=\"ki jd fp ap je kj kk ii jh kl km ik jk kn ko kp jm kq kr ks jo kt ku kv jq kw dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"bv\">Availability<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p id=\"eded\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm js ii ij gp jt ik il im ju in io ip jv iq ir is jw it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">The first question of course, is which service is available in your neighborhood?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"cffe\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda<\/strong>\u00a0has a head start in wiring up the community, but +Movil is deploying fiber at a rapid rate. Fiber optics are cheaper and easier to install than traditional cable systems, so I expect\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0to move quickly.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"a486\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If the cable or fiber passes your house, what distance can your house be from the street to still get a standard installation?<\/li>\n<li id=\"6902\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">100 meters is the standard distance, but there is some discretion based on your circumstances. For\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0fiber, 250 meters is the maximum, but installation charges may apply. Also, be aware that for the fiber, you will need a clear path from the drop box on the pole to your house \u2014 Trees can be a problem and you may be asked to clear them before an installation.<\/li>\n<li id=\"c75f\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If you wish to underground your cable, the buried pipes will be your responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"e6e1\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">What if I can\u2019t get either wired service?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"13af\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If you are new in town, selecting a residence based on internet access is as important has having water or electricity.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">It should be among the first questions you ask of a real estate agent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"0427\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Depending on the answer and if you choose to live in the boondocks where there is no standard cable or fiber service, you will have to rely on one of the several independent service providers. Since the service you can receive in your particular location will be highly variable, I suggest you ask your future neighbors for recommendations. You can be sure that they will be experts on what is available in your location.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c428\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The independent service providers use point to point wireless technology to reach places that are not served by\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda<\/strong>. Prices are going to be higher than the major companies, but then, internet is an essential service these days.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6439\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In addition to wired cable service,<strong class=\"ih co\">\u00a0Cable Onda<\/strong>\u00a0also provides a wireless service from the antenna farm on Volcan Baru for those who have line of sight from their house to the antennas at the top of Baru.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a3e4\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Availability of Cellular Internet Service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"c299\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Tigo<\/strong>(the old Moviestar) offer data plans for getting internet on your phone. I recommend that everyone have one of these data plans for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"34db\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Emergency backup<\/li>\n<li id=\"872e\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When you don\u2019t have wired internet access due to an outage<\/li>\n<li id=\"1091\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When you are away from home<\/li>\n<li id=\"ff01\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw jx jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When the electricity goes out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"71f4\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If your location has good cell service, but no wired provider, getting an unlimited data plan and using your phone as a hot spot might be a good option for your home.<\/p>\n<p id=\"38a9\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Do I need a VPN?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ce67\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A Virtual Private Network (<strong class=\"ih co\">VPN<\/strong>) makes it look like you are surfing the web from some other country. Your traffic is encrypted and not visible to any outside observer. For us here in Panama, the main purpose is to be able to watch US TV shows and movies by pretending we are located in the US.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0787\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, Amazon and others constantly identify and block the\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">IP addresses\u00a0<\/strong>used by\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">VPN<\/strong>\u00a0services. This is a matter of their geographic licensing contracts with the content owners. So, a VPN may or may not help you get your programs from the US.<\/p>\n<p id=\"defd\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I use IPVanish, a top tier service. Your particular VPN service may or may not slow down your overall internet speed. Many VPNs seem to be useless, just keep in mind that you get what you pay for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"de5d\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">How Many Megabits do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"fcc6\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The most frequently asked question seems to be: \u201cHow many megabits do I need for good internet performance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"d78f\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Internet speed is like horsepower in cars \u2014 some is better than none, but beyond a certain point, how much can you really use?<strong class=\"ih co\">\u00a0If you want a quick answer, I will tell you between 10 and 300mbps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"05e3\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, the explanation is a bit more complicated and some are sure to argue. Also, many people ask me questions about basic internet terms, like bit and bytes. What follows is a brief glossary to lay the groundwork for a more detailed discussion of what really determines internet performance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a57d\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Some of the many factors that determine your actual internet performance are discussed after the glossary. I anticipate that this will become an ongoing discussion.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"7150\" class=\"ki jd fp ap je kj kk ii jh kl km ik jk kn ko kp jm kq kr ks jo kt ku kv jq kw dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Glossary<\/h1>\n<p id=\"b806\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm js ii ij gp jt ik il im ju in io ip jv iq ir is jw it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Internet Basics \u2014 what you need to know to understand how things work<\/p>\n<ol class=\"\">\n<li id=\"1d50\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Bits and bytes<br \/>\n<\/strong>All computers speak only in ones or zeros \u2014\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">bits<\/strong>. For communication, 1,000,000 bits per second = 1 megabit per second =\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">1mbps<\/strong>. Billions are gigabits per second =\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">gbps<\/strong>.<br \/>\nA\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">byte<\/strong>\u00a0is 8 bits and is used to measure storage. 1,000,000 bytes =\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">1MB<\/strong>. Notice the capitalization. To send a 100MB photo through a 100mbps internet connection would take 8 seconds.<\/li>\n<li id=\"9021\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Bandwidth<\/strong><br \/>\nBandwidth is simply the amount of information flowing through a channel. The words\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">bandwidth<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">speed<\/strong>\u00a0can be used interchangeably.<\/li>\n<li id=\"94de\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Upstream and downstream<br \/>\n<\/strong>Information we receive is called\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">downstream<\/strong>. What we send out is\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">upstream<\/strong>. Internet services typically, but not always, have more downstream speed (bandwidth) than upstream. However, today when many of us are \u201cuploading\u201d our photos and videos to the cloud, upstream bandwidth is also becoming more important.<\/li>\n<li id=\"e508\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Packets<br \/>\n<\/strong>All information sent over the internet is divided up into \u201c<strong class=\"ih co\">packets<\/strong>\u201d \u2014 self sufficient chunks of data that include the sender\u2019s address, the recipient, the order number of the packet, your \u201cpayload\u201d and other information.<br \/>\nThe genius of the internet is that every one of these packets is an independent message. They can take different routes, arrive out of order and detect if they have been damaged. The receiver knows which ones have been lost and can request re-transmission, which happens all the time. The result is flawless error-free transmission of massive amounts of information around the world, day in and day out.<\/li>\n<li id=\"befd\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Ethernet<br \/>\n<\/strong>The cables and electronics that connect digital devices together using TCP\/IP (Transmission Control Protocol\/Internet Protocol). Older ethernet hardware has a maximum speed of 100mbps. Newer hardware can provide up to 1gbps ethernet.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">If you expect to see more than 100mbps from your internet service, all of your computers, switches, etc. have to be gigabyte ethernet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"469b\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">IP address<br \/>\n<\/strong>Every single computer on the internet has a unique \u201cInternet Protocol\u201d address. This is how requests you make are routed back to your exact computer from anywhere in the world. In our homes and businesses, local IP addresses are generally assigned automatically by our local\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">router<\/strong>.<br \/>\nGlobal IP addresses are bought and sold in blocks. You can google \u201cIP lookup\u201d and find out where an IP address is coming from and who owns it. For example, our +Movil traffic goes from Panama City to 63.245.74.38, a server in North Miami Beach owned by Columbus Networks.<\/li>\n<li id=\"146e\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">DNS<br \/>\n<\/strong>Even though every web site has a unique IP address, we don\u2019t really want to try and remember them as numbers. The\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Domain Name System<\/strong>\u00a0is a global network of independent servers that store the names and addresses of everything on the internet. When you type in \u201cAmazon.com\u201d the words are sent to a\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">DNS<\/strong>\u00a0server which returns an\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">IP<\/strong>\u00a0address, which your computer then uses to get you to their web site. Not only can the laser transmit much more information much faster than an electronic wire, the light can travel for many miles without the need for electricity. This makes fiber impervious to electrical disruptions, like lightning or power outages. The cable that surrounds the fiber can also be much smaller and lighter than an electrical cable.<\/li>\n<li id=\"ad32\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">ISP \u2014 Internet service provider<br \/>\n<\/strong>An\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">ISP<\/strong>\u00a0is a company that connects you with the internet.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda and +Movil are both ISPs<\/strong>, although they also provide TV and telephone services.<\/li>\n<li id=\"7f31\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Downloading vs streaming<br \/>\nDownloading<\/strong>\u00a0means requesting some information from the internet and storing it on your computer.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Streaming<\/strong>\u00a0means to receive the information as you are using it, specifically music and videos. It is not stored on your computer. In the \u201cold days\u201d when the internet was very slow, downloading was the only way to get something like a movie, which might take hours to arrive over a slow connection. Today, with modern services, the internet is plenty fast enough to stream even high definition movies in real time.<\/li>\n<li id=\"c4ce\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Routers, modems, access points and wifi<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>A\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">router<\/strong>\u00a0is any device that directs internet packets to their destination. Whatever your internet connection is, it goes into a\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">router<\/strong>, which assigns local\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">IP address\u00a0<\/strong>to your various devices and gets information sent back to the computer that requested it.<br \/>\n&#8211; A\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">modem<\/strong>\u00a0is any device that converts one type of signal into another. A\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">cable modem<\/strong>\u00a0converts the radio frequency signal of the cable into digital data that you can use. A\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">fiber modem<\/strong>\u00a0does the same thing with light coming from the fiber.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Wifi<\/strong>\u00a0is a local radio transmitter that provides a wireless connection from the\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">router<\/strong>\u00a0to your devices. By design the range is limited and wifi is usually password protected to prevent poaching.<br \/>\n&#8211; An\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">access point\u00a0<\/strong>is a\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>\u00a0transmitter connected by an\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">ethernet<\/strong>\u00a0cable to a\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">router<\/strong>\u00a0somewhere else. For example, you might have your Cable Onda\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">modem\/router<\/strong>\u00a0downstairs and run an\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">ethernet<\/strong>\u00a0cable upstairs to an\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">access point<\/strong>\u00a0to get\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>\u00a0in the upstairs.<br \/>\n&#8211; When you order service from\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+movil<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda<\/strong>, the box they deliver has a modem, router and wifibuilt in. In addition, they support internet telephone service called VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocal) so you can have a \u201cland line\u201d of sorts.<\/li>\n<li id=\"7769\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">802.11 A, B, G, N, AC etc.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong class=\"ih co\">802.11<\/strong>\u00a0is the protocol standard for wifi systems worldwide.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">G<\/strong>\u00a0specifies the 2.4GHz frequency band, is most used and has reasonable range, but is limited to 300mbps.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">N<\/strong>\u00a0specifies the 5GHz band and is faster, but does not penetrate walls, bushes, etc. and has shorter range.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">AC\u00a0<\/strong>specifies a method of combining the bands for up to 1,300mbps and will give high speeds under ideal circumstances. Despite the theoretical speed, the\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">ethernet<\/strong>\u00a0connection that you use to connect to them is limited to 1000mbps and you must also have\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">gigabit<\/strong>\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">ethernet<\/strong>\u00a0on your computer. Otherwise 100mbps is the max.<\/li>\n<li id=\"834e\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm kb ii ij gp kc ik il im kd in io ip ke iq ir is kf it iu iw kh jy jz dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">5G<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s important to understand what\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">5G<\/strong>\u00a0is \u2014 and what it is not.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">5G<\/strong>\u00a0is not a \u201cthing\u201d that can\u00a0<em class=\"kg\">cause<\/em>\u00a0anything, including covid, cancer, climate change or warts.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">5G is an agreement<\/strong>, a standard, that sets out how to better use the entire electromagnetic spectrum going forward. It will result in profound improvements in wireless services of all kinds.<br \/>\n&#8211; In the past, electromagnetic frequencies (<strong class=\"ih co\">spectrum<\/strong>) were assigned to specific and narrow bands \u2014 for\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>, one around 2.4Ghz and one around 5Ghz. Cell phones use these bands and additional bands, but can\u2019t talk to wifi. Digital communication had become a Tower of Babel.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">5G sets out standards\u00a0<\/strong>so that different services can interoperate. The speedometer says 130 miles per hour, why is it taking so long? Speed tests come from specialized servers over the external internet and DO NOT measure the maximum performance of your service provider. Real world performance is far more determined by your own hardware, wiring and software. (With one gigabit internet speeds now possible and many ethernet connections within most internet facilities also limited to one gigabit, the technology it pushed to the max and losses will occur)<\/p>\n<p id=\"fcf6\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Just like with driving, the actual performance of\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">your internet is more determined by congestion and obsolete hardware<\/strong>\u00a0than by how fast you think your connection is.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5348\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Let me give you a real world example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"2579\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I ordered\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0fiber service, which includes\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">3 months of 1000mbps internet.<\/strong>\u00a0Great \u2014 now things are really going to happen fast, right? OK, with a wired ethernet connection,\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">my desktop computer is logging 920mbps downstream.<\/strong>\u00a0Not bad at all.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0bc8\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, using\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>, my 5 year old laptop can only manage\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">300mbps downstream<\/strong>. In my home, upstairs, I use a very high quality but few years old\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">access point\u00a0<\/strong>for intenet access<strong class=\"ih co\">.\u00a0<\/strong>There<strong class=\"ih co\">,\u00a0<\/strong>my\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">wifi<\/strong>\u00a0is only delivering\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">80mbps<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 because it only has a\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">100mbps ethernet connection<\/strong>. I think it\u2019s time to upgrade my hardware, yet again.<\/p>\n<p id=\"444e\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Despite the huge difference in delivered speed, I can\u2019t detect any noticable difference in casual surfing or streaming. However, I will probably upgrade my gear and settle on\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">300mbps service<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">+Movil<\/strong>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Cable Onda<\/strong>, just because.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9011\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"d8e7\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">So the bottom line is, here in Panama, the industry has gone from bandwidth starvation to abundance in a very short time<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">300mbps<\/strong>\u00a0internet from +Movil or Cable Onda is\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">cheaper<\/strong>\u00a0than our former\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">10mbps<\/strong>\u00a0service was a year ago. With\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">smartphone<\/strong>\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">cellular internet<\/strong>\u00a0as a backup, the bad old days of long outages are behind us.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">The providers are more responsive\u00a0<\/strong>than before. And the coming 5 years will see a revolution in global communication unlike anything that has gone before.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"4687\" class=\"ki jd fp ap je kj kk ii jh kl km ik jk kn ko kp jm kq kr ks jo kt ku kv jq kw dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Future developments<\/h1>\n<h2 id=\"9b29\" class=\"jc jd fp ap je jf jg go jh ji jj gr jk gs jl gu jm gv jn gx jo gy jp ha jq jr dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Satellite internet is coming<\/h2>\n<p id=\"6549\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm js ii ij gp jt ik il im ju in io ip jv iq ir is jw it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Elon Musk\u2019s\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">Starlink service<\/strong>\u00a0is already providing internet on a test basis and is proving to be robust and reliable. Within a couple of years, it will be able to provide fast internet access to everyone on earth, even at the bottom of the Grand Canyon or the middle of the Sahara desert.\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">This will be a game changer<\/strong>, opening vast areas to development.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7690\" class=\"if ig fp ih b gm ix ii ij gp iy ik il im iz in io ip ja iq ir is jb it iu iw db dg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ih co\">Also on the immediate horizon is the arrival of 5G wireless<\/strong>. It can potentially provide speeds up to 4 gigabits per second, without wires. But the\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">fiber systems\u00a0<\/strong>can easily up the ante to\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">10 gigabits<\/strong>, or even\u00a0<strong class=\"ih co\">100<\/strong>. So we are very far from the end of the bandwidth wars.
