He ran over 300 miles (480\u00a0km), while <a title=\"Balto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balto\">Balto<\/a>, along with other sled dogs, ran an average of around 31 miles (50\u00a0km).<\/p>\n<p>Now I am a dog sled addict and watched more on the subject, particularly the Serum Run or The Great Race of Mercy\u00a0 they did to help the children of Nome who were dying of diptheria that killed numerous children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nome.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28214\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nome.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nome.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nome-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Nome, Alaska\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nome,_Alaska\">Nome, Alaska<\/a> lies approximately 2 degrees south of the <a title=\"Arctic Circle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic_Circle\">Arctic Circle<\/a>, and while greatly diminished from its peak of 20,000 during the <a title=\"Klondike Gold Rush\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Klondike_Gold_Rush\">gold rush<\/a> days at the turn of the 20th century, it was still the largest town in northern Alaska in 1925, with 455 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alaska Native\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alaska_Native\">Alaska Natives<\/a> and 975 settlers of European descent.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1925_serum_run_to_Nome#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> From November to July, the <a title=\"Port\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port\">port<\/a> on the southern shore of the <a title=\"Seward Peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seward_Peninsula\">Seward Peninsula<\/a> of the <a title=\"Bering Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bering_Sea\">Bering Sea<\/a> was icebound and inaccessible by <a title=\"Steamship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steamship\">steamship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The only link to the rest of the world during the winter was the <a title=\"Iditarod Trail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iditarod_Trail\">Iditarod Trail<\/a>, which ran 938 miles (1,510\u00a0km) from the port of <a title=\"Seward, Alaska\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seward,_Alaska\">Seward<\/a> in the south, across several mountain ranges and the vast <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alaska Interior\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alaska_Interior\">Alaska Interior<\/a> before reaching Nome. The primary source of <a title=\"Mail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mail\">mail<\/a> and needed supplies in 1925 was the dog sled, but within a decade, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bush pilot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bush_pilot\">bush pilots<\/a> would become the dominant method of transportation during the winter months.<\/p>\n<h2>Another Great Story Along the Way &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atlasobscura.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=399fc0402f1b154b67965632e&amp;id=47c480463f&amp;e=d51285d60c\"><strong>More Pies Than People<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlasobscura.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=399fc0402f1b154b67965632e&amp;id=fe42796cf3&amp;e=d51285d60c\">Each March, Iditarod mushers call their 14 dogs to a halt in Takotna, Alaska. They know that stopping there means two things. First, they\u2019re just 623 miles from the finish line of the highly competitive sled-dog race. Second: There will be pie.
