This is a great story from my friend Geoffrey McRae at Gateway to South America.<\/p>\n

The philanthropist talks about her battle to protect the wilds of Chile and Argentina.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sometime in the southern hemisphere summer of 1990, Kristine McDivitt, then CEO of the\u00a0Californian<\/a>\u00a0outdoor-apparel company\u00a0Patagonia<\/a>, took \u201ca bunch of new executives\u201d to\u00a0Argentina<\/a>\u00a0to show them the terrain its clothing was designed to weather. It was a chance to \u201cimbue them with the\u00a0company\u2019s ethos\u00a0and spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n

There, in the middle of nowhere, she ran into Douglas Tompkins, co-founder of the rival outdoor-gear company\u00a0The North Face<\/a>\u00a0and, after he had sold it, the global fashion brand Esprit. He had resolved to sell his share of Esprit and his\u00a0art<\/a>\u00a0collection (which included works by Francis Bacon, Balthus, Hopper, L\u00e9ger and Picasso) so as\u00a0to devote his considerable wealth to environmentalism.<\/p>\n

McDivitt, who turned 40 that year, was tired of corporate life too. She\u2019d first met Yvon Chouinard, the mountaineer who went on to found Patagonia when she was 15. He\u2019d rented the beach house next door to her family\u2019s; she\u2019d \u201ctried to teach him to skimboard\u201d. When she graduated high school, he offered her a summer job at his company, which made mountaineering equipment; after graduating from college she went back to work for him full-time. In 1973 it diversified into outdoor wear. \u201cI\u2019d never had another job,\u201d she tells me. \u201cI\u2019d never had an interview. And the thought that I could be sitting in the same seat when I was 40, 50, 60, maybe even 70\u2026 I knew I wanted something else. I just wasn\u2019t sure what.\u201d<\/p>\n

She and Doug had met before. \u201cHe was a climber,\u201d she tells me. \u201cMy first husband was a climber. Yvon was a climber. It was a small tribe.\u201d This time, a spark ignited. \u201cWe fell in love and that was that. It changed both our lives and started our\u00a0conservation<\/a>\u00a0work.\u201d That ongoing project has protected and, in some places, rewilded more than 5.7m hectares of land, enabling the creation of 11 new national parks in Chile and Argentina and the expansion of several others. Their donations amount to the largest gift of land in history, projects on which they and private supporters have spent $350m.<\/p>\n

We meet in London, where Tompkins has come to give a talk on her work, having flown from New York where she was speaking at an event during the UN General Assembly. Girlishly dressed in a cotton skirt, cardigan and flats, she has the slightness, stature and steel-core air of a ballerina. Doug always called her Birdy, and there is indeed something bird-like about her. \u201cKris is like a migratory species,\u201d an aide had answered when I\u2019d asked where she lives. She is flying back to Chile the next day. Is she always on the move?<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than I\u2019d like at the moment,\u201d she replies. \u201cFor the past 26 years, we\u2019ve lived wherever the projects are [mostly in Patagonia]. But I\u2019m a nester. Nobody believes it but I am. I don\u2019t do well hopping around but that\u2019s been our life. And since Doug died\u201d \u2013 in 2015, from hypothermia following a kayaking accident \u2013 \u201cI\u2019ve put up with it because we\u2019ve had all these projects, which I love.\u201d As the land they acquired and have worked to conserve has returned to public ownership, she\u2019s been spending more time on the ranch in California\u2019s Ventura County where she grew up.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t imagine\u00a0living<\/em>\u00a0there,\u201d Tompkins confesses. \u201cI come from Southern California, where the temperature is between 68 and 72 degrees and it almost never rains.\u201d In this part of Chile, the winters are bitter and the average rainfall is 1,942mm a year. There were also no roads. \u201cYou either had to come in by\u00a0boat<\/a>\u00a0down a fjord or fly in [Doug had a Cessna] in vicious weather.\u201d\u201cDoug was the draw,\u201d she stresses about her move to South America after their marriage in 1994. He had found a farm in Chile situated \u201cat the toe of a fjord that cost what a garage would cost in San Francisco\u201d. The asking price was $35 a hectare: there were 17,000 ha of temperate rainforest. He bought the lot for $600,000.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The farmhouse at Fundo Re\u00f1ihu\u00e9 was uninhabitable so the Tompkinses lived in the former smokehouse, a space of \u201cbarely 100sq ft\u201d, Tompkins says. \u201cWe were really dependent on each other\u00a0for everything. But you know when you\u2019re in love, and everything\u2019s fabulous, so it didn\u2019t matter. In fact, when the house that became our base was\u00a0ready\u201d \u2013 in its final permutation an infinitely photogenic five-bedroom property with an organic farm\u00a0that\u00a0she sold two years ago (Sotheby\u2019s asking price: $10.5m) \u2013 \u201cI didn\u2019t want to move in. I was very happy in the smokehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regardless, it was the land that mattered. As more adjoining parcels became available, they acquired them, careful never to purchase areas where people lived and buying mostly from absentee owners (during the 1930s, foreigners were offered land for rent or concessions if they were prepared to settle in Patagonia, and many families had retained but no longer occupied their estates). In 2007 they donated 294,000ha to the Chilean State to create what was posthumously renamed Pumal\u00edn National Park: Douglas R Tompkins. Today its area extends over 402,392ha of northern Patagonia and protects a fifth of all the alerce trees \u2013 a relative of the redwood \u2013 in Chile, as well as puma,\u00a0pudu<\/em>\u00a0(a kind of deer) and\u00a0monito del monte<\/em>, a rare marsupial.<\/p>\n

In the early days, they faced considerable hostility. \u201cWe were completely vilified,\u201d she says. \u201cPumal\u00edn goes from the Argentine border to the Pacific Ocean so we were known as \u2018the couple who\u00a0cut Chile in half\u2019.\u201d And it went downhill from there. \u201cWe were\u00a0creating a new Jewish state \u2013 although we were raised as Anglicans; a nuclear waste site for the United States; a base camp\u00a0for the Argentine military so they could finish Chile off once\u00a0and for all. There were a lot of death threats. We had military planes flying over where we were based. Our phones were tapped for five years. At the time it was frightening. But when I look back\u00a0on it, it seems very reasonable to me. Foreigners coming to\u00a0buy up huge amounts of land and do nothing with it \u2013 of course,\u00a0there was tremendous scepticism, so I don\u2019t really worry\u00a0about that any more.\u201d<\/p>\n

In any case, their intention was never to keep the land. \u201cOur\u00a0work was based on leveraging. We\u2019re a family foundation, but\u00a0we\u00a0saw early on that to really go after large-scale conservation we\u00a0needed to leverage every dollar that we invested\u201d by persuading the government to provide, protect and manage adjacent land. So\u00a0when acquiring estates, \u201cwe always looked at what was next\u00a0door\u201d. In that respect, Tompkins believes their combined business background was helpful. \u201cIt gives you a kind of discipline\u00a0and viciousness about results that some NGOs or foundations don\u2019t\u00a0have.\u201d It also taught her to manage a large\u00a0staff:\u00a0at its peak, Tompkins Conservation employed \u201cup to\u00a0350 people, though\u00a0now that we\u2019ve donated everything it\u2019s shrunk a lot in the\u00a0past year\u201d.<\/p>\n

But, she stresses, \u201cnone of this would have been achieved without the [governments of Chile and Argentina] wanting it as badly as we did.\u201d Over the past 25 years, she has worked with 10 presidencies. \u201cYou can\u2019t donate something that a country doesn\u2019t want to accept. And people forget that it\u2019s not always politically beneficial to a president to declare a new national park. Without [Ricardo] Lagos, without [Michelle] Bachelet \u2013 she was extraordinary! \u2013 without [Sebastian] Pi\u00f1era\u201d \u2013 the Chilean president, to whom she presented a Global Citizenship award at the UN General Assembly in September \u2013 \u201cthere would have been no national park creation. That award was a salute to the entire country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The most recent park she was instrumental in creating is Parque Patagonia, which covers more than 300,000ha, 27 per cent of which was donated to the Chilean government last April. It, too, was initially controversial. \u201cThere was a lot of suspicions, and downright unhappiness, about Chile\u2019s third-largest sheep ranch becoming a park,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019d never bought land with livestock\u00a0on it, and this made it so contentious. By the time we closed on the deal, we had 25,000 sheep worth $1m, so all of a sudden we\u2019d become ranchers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tompkins ran the ranch for 14 years. \u201cDoug saw this as my project. So I made a business plan, figured out how to maximise\u00a0the\u00a0investment. And that helped fund the transition of what became the national park. You have to be really cautious [selling that much livestock]; you don\u2019t want to have a negative impact on the meat and wool markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Pumal\u00edn is about trees, Parque Patagonia is about landscape and\u00a0wildlife<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 notably a rare deer, the\u00a0huemul<\/em>, Chile\u2019s national animal, which was facing extinction but whose numbers are rising\u00a0again. Once the sheep were gone, and with them, 600km of fencing, herds of\u00a0guanaco<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 related to the llama \u2013 returned to\u00a0the\u00a0valley. A casualty of their return has been the roses Tompkins cultivated in the garden of the lodge they built: \u201cI\u2019m fighting with them over that. I say, \u2018You have 750,000 acres. Leave\u00a0the roses alone!\u2019 But they don\u2019t listen.\u201d She puts their present\u00a0number at about 3,000, which in turn has positively affected the puma population.<\/p>\n

At Estancia Iber\u00e1, meanwhile, a reserve of almost 20,000ha in northern Argentina purchased in 2000, they are proactively rewilding \u2013 a term, incidentally, Tompkins reckons they coined \u2013 by bringing back species that had died out there completely. \u201c[Rewilding] is not for the faint at heart,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s very costly and very complicated. You have to make sure the threats that extinguished them in the first place no longer exist. And though we have had great victories, when something goes wrong you lose animals.\u201d And that, she says, hurts.<\/p>\n

But the giant anteaters they\u2019ve brought back are now thriving, as are white-collared peccaries and pampas deer. Indeed, having worked up to the apex predators, the focus now is the jaguar, a species hunted to extinction in the Iber\u00e1 wetlands in the 1930s. Three are due to be released in January. Lately, Tompkins Conservation has diversified into the oceans, too, creating two parks covering 260,000sq km \u201cat that junction between the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Antarctic\u201d, where fishing is now banned completely. But ultimately, it\u2019s the future of the planet that concerns her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to die of old age,\u201d she says. \u201cYou probably will as well. But young people are going to die of climate change. It\u2019s not that we haven\u2019t known that, but boy oh boy: that gives you another perspective, a reason to get out of bed.\u201d And that is why she puts her money where her mouth is. Because every hectare that Tompkins protects sequesters carbon, which is at least a step towards mitigating global warming.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as I miss Doug, and [his death] almost killed me, sometimes I pinch myself that I\u2019ve led this life for so long. Even on the worst days, I love what I\u2019m doing. Imagine the percentage of people who can say that, who can\u2019t wait to get out of bed because even when things are rotten, you know you\u2019re on the right track. Even in the worst of the worst of the worst times, you\u2019re on the right path. You\u2019re doing what you want to do. That\u2019s a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n
