{"id":27090,"date":"2019-09-23T14:27:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T19:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=27090"},"modified":"2019-09-23T14:27:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T19:27:58","slug":"panama-must-work-together-air-transport-cerda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/panama-must-work-together-air-transport-cerda\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama must work together with air transport \u2013 Cerda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/city-pic-from-anton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27091\" src=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/city-pic-from-anton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/city-pic-from-anton.jpg 700w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/city-pic-from-anton-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Patrick Appleton writes in Airlines magazine about how\u00a0IATA analysis warns that proposed taxes could see aviation\u2019s economic contribution fall by $6 billion with the loss of 170,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Panama\u2019s government must work with the air transport industry to address the challenges facing the sector in the country, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Panama Aviation Day, Peter Cerda, IATA\u2019s Regional Vice President for the Americas said collaboration between industry and state is the way forward to find the solutions needed.<\/p>\n<p>Referencing the growing demand for air connectivity in the Central American nation, Cerda said addressing the issues of airspace optimization, the expansion of Tocumen International Airport and reducing environmental impact are key for the industry\u2019s sustainable growth in Panama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe success of commercial aviation in Panama\u00a0over the next 20 years largely depends on taking the necessary decisions on infrastructure, taxes, regulations and competitiveness today,\u201d said Cerda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis requires a joint commitment between the state and all of us who are part of the value chain of the aviation industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tocumen International Airport serves almost 90 direct passenger and cargo destinations, making Panama the country with best air connectivity in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>According to IATA\u2019s latest economic study, air transport contributes, directly and indirectly, $8.5 billion to the Panamanian economy, which is equivalent to 14% of the country\u2019s GDP, and generates 238,000 direct and indirect jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Cerda said that Panama must view the aviation industry as an important strategic partner which can boost the economy.<\/p>\n<p>IATA analysis warns that proposed taxes could see aviation\u2019s economic contribution fall by $6 billion with the loss of 170,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanama provides a clear example of how air transport can be developed to become the cornerstone of a nation\u2019s economy,\u201d added Cerda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the country is today at a crossroads. Although it has created the conditions to become one of the most important hubs in the Americas, other competitors in the region are catching up. Panama cannot rest on its laurels and lose what it has achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panama Aviation Day was organized by IATA, the Panama Airlines Association, the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association, Airports Council International and the Civil Aviation Authority.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wpcf7 no-js\" id=\"wpcf7-f16536-o1\" lang=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" data-wpcf7-id=\"16536\">\n<div
