That\u00a0follows 7 percent trade growth in 2017.\u00a0Both figures contrast with declines in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latinvex.com\/app\/article.aspx?id=3062\">2016<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latinvex.com\/app\/article.aspx?id=2546\">2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both US exports to Latin America and imports from the region grew 9 percent each to $428.8 billion and $468.8 billion, respectively. As a result, the US trade deficit with Latin America grew 8.9 percent to $40 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade with Mexico, the largest US trade partner in Latin America, grew 9.7 percent to $611.5 billion, with US exports\u00a0\u00a0up 8.9 percent to $265 billion and imports expanding 10.3 percent to $346.5 billion. As a result, the US trade deficit with Mexico grew 15 percent to $81.5 billion &#8212; the highest on record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade with Brazil grew 6 percent to $70.7 billion thanks to increases in both exports and imports with the South American country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trade growth with Mexico came despite significant uncertainty over the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (<a href=\"http:\/\/latinvex.com\/app\/section.aspx?id=390&amp;g=1\">NAFTA<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0On November 30, the US signed a new trade pact with Mexico and Canada aimed at replacing NAFTA \u2013 the\u00a0United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USMCA is still pending ratification by the three countries\u2019 legislatures and in the US faces challenges. (See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latinvex.com\/app\/article.aspx?id=4062\">USMCA: Uncertain Outlook<\/a>).The US Chamber of Commerce and more than 200 companies and associations representing farmers and ranchers, manufacturers, service providers, and technology companies have launched the USMCA Coalition, which will advocate for US congressional approval of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. (See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latinvex.com\/app\/article.aspx?id=4063\">US Chamber, Companies Support USMCA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>BILLIONAIRES: BRAZIL GAINS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil is the only country outside of the United States that managed to increase its number if billionaires the past year, according to the latest annual ranking from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/billionaires\/#3bc8aa11251c\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrazil has come roaring back\u2014at least when it comes to the very wealthy,\u201d\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>Assistant Managing Editor Kerry Dolan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andersonantunes\/2019\/03\/05\/brazil-bounces-back-with-a-slew-of-new-billionaires\/#6ee33c17650f\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cA whopping 18 new billionaires hail from the South American country this year, a number of whom have taken their companies public on the S\u00e3o Paulo stock exchange in the recent past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altogether\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0found 58 billionaires in Brazil this year worth a combined $175 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banker\u00a0<strong>Joseph Safra<\/strong>\u00a0replaced 3G Capital owner\u00a0<strong>Jorge Lemann<\/strong>\u00a0as the richest person, thanks to an estimated fortune of $25.2 billion (versus $22.8 billion for Lemann). Safra also ranks as the world\u2019s richest banker, according to\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexican mogul\u00a0<strong>Carlos Slim<\/strong>\u00a0remains the richest person in Latin America, with an estimated fortune of $64 billion, making him also the fifth-richest in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TOP BRANDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexican breadbaker Grupo Bimbo made the ranking of the top 100 most successful fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands worldwide from UK-based Euromonitor International.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It came in at 100<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place and was the only company from Latin America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US-based Kraft Heinz (which is partly owned by Brazil\u2019s 3G capital) was ranked by its two brands. Kraft at 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place and Heinz at 39<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ranking encompasses packaged food, soft drinks,beauty and personal care,
