Meet the Gean family: She&#8217;s from Israel, he&#8217;s from Italy. They met in Japan, and they live in Panama with their five kids.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hello, can I ask what you\u2019ll be doing in Italy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: My husband is from Florence, so we\u2019re going there for two days and then back home to Panama. We\u2019ve lived in Panama for 11 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Sounds pretty exotic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text fi_smart_docked\">Michal: My husband\u2019s father founded a company there and asked us to come. It turns out there\u2019s a large Jewish community. The children go to a Jewish school. It\u2019s fun in Panama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>How was Israel?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Charming. My husband and I have family here; we came to see them. We usually visit every two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Mindi, do you remember your earlier visits here?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: No, my brain is blank, but I do remember we went to a pool. This time we didn\u2019t go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: This is the first time we\u2019ve visited in winter. We even had to buy coats for the children, because in Panama it\u2019s hot all the time. My family lives in Timrat [in northern Israel], and now the anemones and cyclamens are in bloom \u2013 flowers the children don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: We just walked and walked. It was a little boring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>What do you like doing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: Playing in the pool. I don\u2019t like the sea because it\u2019s cold and there are fish. We were taken to see tanks; I liked climbing on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: My father took us to Latrun, to the tanks [at the Armored Corps Museum].<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: There were ants all over them. I really had a good time in Israel; I loved playing with my cousins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Cousins are fun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: I have a lot of aunts and uncles and cousins here; I didn\u2019t even get to meet them all \u2013 my grandpa has eight brothers and sisters. And I also really improved my Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>What language do people speak in Panama?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Spanish. The children speak four languages: Spanish, English, Hebrew with me and Italian with my husband.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Did you meet your husband in Israel or Italy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: We actually met in Tokyo. I was in Japan on a post-army trip and I stayed to go to university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Isn\u2019t it awfully hard to study in Japanese?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: It was hard, but I did it. Then I did four years of electronics at a Japanese university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Hard-core.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Back then there were no foreigners, and if there were, they were Chinese. The closest ones to me were students from Saudi Arabia. Japan is a different planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>In what way?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Many times I found myself just watching the way things are served, how people behave even on public transportation, how people work. Let\u2019s say you forgot a bag somewhere \u2013 you\u2019ll go back hours later and find it in the same place or at the local police station. It was really terrific. But I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d do it again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Why?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Because even after I could speak Japanese I wasn\u2019t accepted; I remained a foreigner. The Japanese are very insular. Sometimes it seems they\u2019re not nice, but it\u2019s not like that. They keep their distance because they believe it\u2019s wrong to intervene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Sounds like a way to be alone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: After university there was a period when I no longer had friends in Japan who spoke Hebrew, and I felt alone. That\u2019s how I got to a Chabad House. It was always walking distance from where I lived, but it took me seven years to get there. My husband would go there regularly, but the first time I went he was on a visit to Italy. Everyone told me, \u201cThere\u2019s someone you have to come back to meet, you\u2019re a perfect match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>And were they right?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Fast-forward to four children later.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Five \u2013 I have another son, Ariel; he went with his dad to return the car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>For someone traveling with five children and 10 suitcases, you seem pretty calm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Michal: Sometimes it\u2019s chaotic, but fun. You just have to accept it. We like being together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\"><em>Kids, do you miss home?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: I get to Panama, go to sleep, and as soon as I wake up \u2013 school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Malchiel: Not fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-body-text\">Mindi: I don\u2019t want to go.
