Spa is ideal for those longing to retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern living.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Sometimes Boquete can get a little bit that way, what with 25,000 people now and growing!<\/em>\u00a0 At 7260 feet above sea level (2,200 meters), the reserve has the highest lodging facilities in the country, and lies inside the primary cloud forest of Volcan Baru National Park, which was established in 1976.\u00a0 Volcan Baru is adjacent to the 407,000 acre Parque Internacional La Amistad, which straddles Costa Rica and Panama.\u00a0\u00a0 This \u00a0400 hectare reserve has been protected by the private efforts of its founders in 1970.\u00a0 My friend and the owner of Los Quetzales Lodge, Carlos Alfaro is a dedicated hotelier and expert in the bio diversity here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before I go further into this story let me step back and show you where we live and where we traveled one weekend while looking at agricultural properties for some investors.\u00a0 Ruta Sur was recently built as a\u00a0 highway through the mountains to shorten the trip from Boquete to Volcan here in the western highlands of Panama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bOQUETE-MAP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"bOQUETE MAP\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bOQUETE-MAP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"747\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Ruta-Sur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-19008\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Ruta-Sur-1024x862.jpg\" alt=\"Ruta Sur\" width=\"742\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Ruta-Sur-1024x862.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Ruta-Sur-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Ruta-Sur.jpg 1056w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The land use transitions from coffee and vegetables over to a huge citrus farm and then to dairy and green house operations.\u00a0 It is truly a land that\u00a0invites\u00a0one to explore and at any minute I expected Julie Andrews to pop out of the meadow singing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0059742\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Sounds of Music.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/meadows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"meadows\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/meadows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"496\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The valleys are verdant green and the cows are happy!!\u00a0 This is where most of the Grade A Leche or milk comes from.\u00a0 It is shipped out, pasteurized and processed into milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc and it\u00a0 indeed produces good quality products.\u00a0 With no subsidy by the government, milk is not cheap here and the dairy farmers that I have meet with often tell me of increasing profits and the best years that they have seen recently.\u00a0 We have seen properties and operations that yield a solid 10% return on investment and amortize in less than 9 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/dairy-cows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"dairy cows\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/dairy-cows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"748\" height=\"531\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u00a0are added value opportunities with green house operations that can co exist with the dairy operations\u00a0and boost returns into the teens.\u00a0 Government programs are set up for loan rates in the 2-3% range with 10 year amortization schedules so do the math, leveraged returns can be very attractive. Plus this is a sustainable operation that will be very important with the\u00a0\u00a0food supply problems in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/green-houses.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"green houses\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/green-houses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"747\" height=\"547\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As we come down the Ruta Sur to the other side of the Volcan Baru the meadows stretch out for miles and the clouds blanket the summit of\u00a0Volcan Baru\u00a0that\u00a0is over 11,000 feet high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/volcan-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"volcan 2\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/volcan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We drive up through Bambito which is very lush with flowers and trees and the valleys get greener and greener.\u00a0 The Hotel Bambito is also very popular and picturesque.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bambito.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-11287\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bambito.jpg\" alt=\"bambito\" width=\"754\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bambito.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bambito-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As we travel through Volcan and up into the Volcan Baru Park, one can appreciate the beauty of this mountain and it&#8217;s majestic peaks.\u00a0 In the morning the peaks are very visible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/baru.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"baru\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/baru.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"743\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the day progresses, the clouds build and move into the high valleys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/baru-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"baru 2\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/baru-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"489\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We continue on through Cerro Punta and to the end of the paved road in Guadalupe where our lodge is located.\u00a0 While we still had the day with us we headed up to one of the ranger stations that is the beginning of the trail where one can hike up around the summit and back to Boquete if you have an extra 6 hours and a lot of stamina.\u00a0 The road we traveled takes you into verdant high valleys where the chalets look like ones I have seen in Davos and St, Moritz in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chalet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"chalet\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chalet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"508\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are horse farms in the area and numerous things to see and do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/horses.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"horses\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/horses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was time to get back to our place and after a glass of wine in the lodge great room\u00a0we moved on to dinner which by the way, is worth the trip over there\u00a0as my friend Carlos\u00a0has hired an excellent chef. A specialty is fresh trout from one of his ponds up in the cloud forest.\u00a0 OK yes, \u00a0that is another fire place with a roaring fire going.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/los-q-dining-room1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"los q dining room\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/los-q-dining-room1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"746\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We were blessed with an earlier gift of a bottle of Veuve Clicquot from a neighbor so we returned to our suite where we had a roaring fire and toasted our love for life and each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We often head out early up the mountain to higher altitudes and venture into the rain forest where you can stay in one of\u00a0the other private cabins at Los Quetzales\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/hiking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"hiking\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/hiking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"590\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cabin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"cabin\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cabin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"589\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And now for the star of our show and the namesake of the lodge and trail\u00a0&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;\u00a0the Resplendent\u00a0Quetzal\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cchscostarica08.pbworks.com\/f\/Quetzal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"598\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charmeycam.com\/CR\/ResplendentQuetzal2003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"519\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another place is one that I have been to a half a dozen times and it still\u00a0 amazes me.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fincadracula.com\/Welcome.html\" target=\"_blank\">Finca Dracula\u00a0<\/a>is an award winning botanical garden\u00a0that boasts of more than 2200 different orchid species from Central and South America. This collection of rare orchids is the largest in Latin America and one of the largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/orchid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"orchid\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/orchid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"785\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Well, if
