Now, it hopes to enlarge its influence in film and TV, addressing its own complicated history with notable projects while spotlighting the best of a Spanish-language industry that reaches three continents.<\/p>\n<p>I was in Panama City recently for the <a href=\"http:\/\/iffpanama.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Panama International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, held a few miles from what for 85 years was fortified U.S. territory, the Canal Zone. The festival featured Oscar-winning Best Foreign-Language Film <em>A Fantastic Woman<\/em>\u00a0and <strong>Abner Benaim<\/strong>\u2019s loving documentary about Panamanian actor and musician Ruben Blades.<\/p>\n<p>Other films \u2013 further displaying the diversity of projects \u2013 included <em>Devil\u2019s Freedom<\/em>,<strong> Everardo Gonzalez<\/strong>\u2019 bleak and chilling documentary about Mexico\u2019s murderous kidnapping culture, and the sweet lesbian relationship comedy, <em>Anchor and Hope<\/em>, from Barcelona-based <strong>Carlos Marques-Marcet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most haunting was <em>Diciembres<\/em>, <strong>Enrique Castro Rios<\/strong>\u2019 fictional take on the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama and its impacts on three generations of a family.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/knIAZ4I27DY\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Diciembres<\/em> is interwoven with actual invasion footage, shot mostly by U.S. troops as they swept through the country to remove Panamanian dictator <strong>Manuel Noriega<\/strong> for complicated reasons that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_invasion_of_Panama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remain hard to believe<\/a>. Just before attending the film\u2019s screening, I happened to ride through the still-battered El Chorillo slum that took the brunt of the U.S. attack (major military barracks were in the area). Realizing the connection gave the film an extra gut punch of (sur)reality.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-mile-long canal, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, carries about 5% of the world\u2019s shipping traffic. Now, as Panama strives to be part of another globally influential industry, the seven-year-old festival has become a showcase of the country\u2019s storytellers.<\/p>\n<p>Given the previous paucity of local projects, it\u2019s not surprising that Panama\u2019s first significant films have focused on its complicated history, especially of the Canal\u2019s decades-long construction, U.S. occupation, and Noriega invasion, not to mention the more recent <strong>Panama Papers<\/strong> scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that it\u2019s like that in every country that is beginning to tell its own stories,\u201d said <strong>Pituka Ortega Heilbron<\/strong>, the festival\u2019s director general. \u201cThe first stories we\u2019re going to tell are stories that directly relate to our essence. (It\u2019s) important to us for the people to understand that, well, it wasn\u2019t always peachy keen and that there\u2019s always going to be a struggle to find our own identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortega Heilbron has been a crucial part of that introspective creative moment. Beyond running the festival, she produced and was one of five segment directors in 2015\u2019s <em>Panama Canal Stories<\/em>. Benaim, who directed another segment of <em>Stories<\/em>, also directed the 2014 documentary <em>Invasion<\/em>, about guess what.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wf3u8MRmv2g\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Days before the festival, Pituka Heilbron found out that <strong>Netflix<\/strong> had picked up <em>Panama Canal Stories<\/em>\u00a0to show in 191 countries, with one exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was right before the festival, so I haven\u2019t even been able to absorb it, but yeah, it\u2019s a pretty big deal, absolutely,\u201d Ortega Heilbron said. \u201cBut you know what happens. It\u2019s available everywhere on Netflix except, apparently, the United States. \u00a0And it\u2019s a film that U.S. citizens would definitely want to see because it\u2019s so, I mean, the U.S. is all over that film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ah, Netflix. The streaming giant just reported another mammoth quarter this past week, adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tubefilter.com\/2018\/04\/16\/netflix-q1-2018-earnings-report\/\">7.4 million subscribers<\/a> to a global total of 125 million, generating $3.7 billion in revenue. Among other recent Netflix initiatives: buying a theater chain and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tubefilter.com\/2018\/04\/06\/netflix-regency-outdoor-advertising\/\">regional billboard company<\/a>, and spending $1 billion to increase acquisitions of European foreign-language content.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time the company has continued to invest in Spanish-language programming. One of its first international successes was <em>Narcos<\/em>, the episodic crime drama based on Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. <em>Narcos<\/em> proved so successful the company even syndicated the show to Univision after its initial Netflix run.<\/p>\n<p>Filmmakers such as Marques-Marcet and Benaim express ambivalence about Netflix, much as do filmmakers in many other places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to say that for me there\u2019s a problem with Netflix,\u201d said Marques-Marcet. \u201cIt\u2019s like they don\u2019t believe in theatrical release, and to me, the theatrical release is life. Even if I know only 20,000 people will go to a theater to see my movie, I\u2019m happy these 20,000 people were able to see the movie as it was designed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the backers of <em>Anchor and Hope<\/em>\u00a0(Spanish title <em>Tierra Firme<\/em>) have pitched the film to Netflix. It\u2019s set on a barge on the canals west of London. Its cast \u2013 including Geraldine Chaplin and her real-life daughter, Oona Chaplin \u2013 shift back and forth between English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t fit into any of their categories, because it\u2019s a Spanish movie, but then it\u2019s a Spanish movie that is not in Spanish, it\u2019s (mostly) in English,\u201d Marques-Marcet said. \u201cThey don\u2019t know what to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benaim\u2019s documentary, <em>Ruben Blades is Not My Name<\/em>, stands a better chance at a U.S. theatrical run, especially after it won the Audience Award at the recent <strong>South By Southwest Film Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UzLvRffR7TA\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The film is a fond look at Blades, in both his New York home and his Panama City home town. Blades, of course, is a Latin Grammy-winning salsa superstar who has collaborated with the likes of <strong>Sting<\/strong> and <strong>Paul Simon<\/strong> (both appear in the film). His remarkable career also includes a Harvard degree and a stint as Panama\u2019s tourism minister, as well as roles in nearly 50 films and TV shows, from <em>The Milagro Beanfield War<\/em> to <em>Gideon\u2019s Crossing<\/em> to <em>Fear the Walking Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like Marques-Marcet, Benaim loves an old-school theatrical run. But, \u201cIt\u2019s good to know there are so many options now,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of new opportunities in direct sales on the Internet and now theatrical is just one of the options. It\u2019s not the only one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even without a \u201cNorth American\u201d run (the film business classifies that market as only the U.S. and Canada, despite what maps say), Benaim\u2019s film already has appeared in Mexico, much of Central America, Spain, and elsewhere. The Latin American market is huge, topping 650 million people.<\/p>\n<p>The entire region is having a bigger impact on world film and TV. For instance, online video sites such as <strong>Pongalo<\/strong> have been able to profitably license and even adapt for U.S. TV networks the hugely popular telenovelas of Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela (ABC hit <em>Jane the Virgin<\/em>\u00a0started as a Pongalo-licensed telenovela).<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will start with the fact that this year\u2019s Oscars for best foreign film and best picture were won by two Latin Americans,\u201d said <strong>Ortega Heilbron<\/strong>, referring to Mexico\u2019s <strong>Guillermo del Toro<\/strong> for <em>The Shape of Water<\/em>\u00a0and <em>A Fantastic Woman<\/em>\u201d director <strong>Sebastian Lelio<\/strong> of Chile. \u201cThat\u2019s a pretty big deal. I mean, it\u2019s a good barometer of the quality of filmmaking in Latin America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OTT streaming services such as Netflix can give even filmmakers from small countries such as Panama another way to get seen around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology is technology,\u201d Ortega Heilbron said. \u201cFor our films, Latin American films, I believe that their first home should be in the theaters, but if they can get themselves in OTTs and get themselves an opportunity to be seen, let it be. I think, \u2018Bring it on.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bring it on indeed.
