{"id":2260,"date":"2011-03-03T10:07:04","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T15:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=2260"},"modified":"2011-03-03T10:07:04","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T15:07:04","slug":"latam-leads-google-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/latam-leads-google-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"LatAm Leads Google Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/data?pid=avimage&amp;iid=iEOHSvjVkJT0\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As reported in Bloomberg, the world&#8217;s biggest Internet-search company, is opening new offices in Latin America and boosting staffing levels by 50 percent to capitalize on its fastest-growing region.\u00a0\u00a0Latin America now has some of the best fiber based networks in the world and the populace is taking advantage of this.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue from Latin America surged 80 percent last year, outpacing every other market, Vice President\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\" href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Dennis+Woodside&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=noir_wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Dennis Woodside<\/a>said in an interview at the company\u2019s Buenos Aires office. Google, which has about 500\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, 'GOOG:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=GOOG%3AUS\">people<\/a>\u00a0in the region, has opened branches in Santiago, Lima and Bogota to take advantage of the growth, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing is the Internet coming into its own in all the Latin American markets,\u201d said Woodside, who handles sales for the Americas, including the U.S. \u201cThere are 650 million people in the region, and a lot of them are really coming online for the first time. Our business in Latin America is just booming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google is seeking new growth areas to offset a maturing U.S. market and a diminished presence in China, the world\u2019s most populous country. The U.S. and the U.K. accounted for about 60 percent of the $29.3 billion in total\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, 'GOOG:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=GOOG%3AUS\">revenue<\/a>last year, most of which was generated by ads. Google, based in Mountain View, California, doesn\u2019t say what portion came from Latin America.<\/p>\n<p><a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, 'GOOG:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=GOOG%3AUS\">Google<\/a>\u00a0fell $12.64, or 2.1 percent, to $600.76 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have climbed 1.1 percent this year.<\/p>\n<p>Android Software<\/p>\n<p>Even as sales in Latin America boom, Google\u2019s Android operating system is making slower inroads in the region, Woodside said. The software, which runs on smartphones and tablet computers, hasn\u2019t caught on the way it has in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndroid is growing, but it\u2019s still early days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Android topped\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, 'AAPL:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=AAPL%3AUS\">Apple Inc.<\/a>\u2019s iPhone in U.S. smartphone subscribers for the first time in November, accounting for 26 percent of the market, according to research firm ComScore Inc. Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry, had the top spot with 33.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Google is seeking a replacement for\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\" href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Alexandre+Hohagen&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=noir_wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Alexandre Hohagen<\/a>, the former head of Latin American operations in Brazil, who defected to Facebook Inc. in February. The company isn\u2019t concerned about his departure, Woodside said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a very deep bench,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have confidence in our bench and our ability to develop people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google announced in January that co-founder\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\" href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Larry+Page&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=noir_wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Larry Page<\/a>\u00a0will take over as chief executive officer from\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\" href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Eric+Schmidt&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=noir_wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Eric Schmidt<\/a>\u00a0on April 4. Schmidt, who oversaw the transformation of a barely profitable startup into a company with a market capitalization of $200 billion, said he will focus on deals, partnerships and customers.<\/p>\n<p>In China, a dispute over Internet censorship may rein in\u00a0<a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, 'GOOG:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=GOOG%3AUS\">Google<\/a>\u2019s growth prospects. In March 2010, the company shut down its Chinese search service and redirected local users to its unfiltered Hong Kong site.
