They were followed by hosts Nicaragua (11-7-10), Costa Rica (10-9-13), Guatemala (7-14-11) and Honduras (0-6-0).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"word-link\" title=\"athletics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\">Athletics<\/a>, <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"boccia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/boccia\">boccia<\/a>, <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"goalball\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/goalball\">goalball<\/a>, <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"powerlifting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/powerlifting\">powerlifting<\/a>, <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"swimming\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/swimming\">swimming<\/a> and <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"wheelchair basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/wheelchair-basketball\">wheelchair basketball<\/a> were the six contested sports.<\/p>\n<p>Nicaraguan middle-distance Paralympic runner Gabriel Cuadra Holmann, also one of the designers of the Managua 2018 logo, stood out with golds in the men\u2019s 800m and 1,500m <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"T38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\/classification\">T38<\/a>. \u201cI am happy for my performance and it motivates me in the lead-up to Lima 2019 and Tokyo 2020,\u201d said Holmann.<\/p>\n<p>The home crowd also celebrated <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"athletics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\">athletics<\/a> titles through Luis Prado in the men\u2019s 100m and 400m <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"T38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\/classification\">T38<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guatemala enjoyed success through vision impaired long distance Paralympic runner Oscar Raxon, who sealed gold in the men\u2019s 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"T11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\/classification\">T11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by runners Olbeniz Atencio (<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"T13\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\/classification\">T13<\/a>) and Ana Galvez (<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"T12\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\/classification\">T12<\/a>), who won three titles each, Panama ended first in the <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"athletics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/athletics\">athletics<\/a> medals table with 13 golds, two silvers and two bronze.<\/p>\n<p>Many of Panama\u2019s gold medals came from the <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"swimming\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/swimming\">swimming<\/a> competition as well, winning seven golds, eight silvers and two bronze. Costa Rica\u2019s Youth Parapan American champion Camila Haase was one of the main stars in the pool as she swam to triple gold.<\/p>\n<p>The first <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"boccia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/boccia\">boccia<\/a> competition to ever be held in Central America took place as part of the Games programme. El Salvador\u2019s Gerardo Reyes (<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"BC1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/classification\">BC1<\/a>) and Mario Ernesto Sayes (<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"BC2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/classification\">BC2<\/a>) won their respective categories and showed potential ahead of future international events.<\/p>\n<p>In <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"goalball\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/goalball\">goalball<\/a>, Nicaragua defeated Guatemala 10-8 and 7-2 in both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s finals, respectively. The hosts proved strong in team events as they also came on top in the men\u2019s <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"wheelchair basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/wheelchair-basketball\">wheelchair basketball<\/a> event following a 60-44 victory over El Salvador. Guatemala topped the podium among women after beating El Salvador 10-3.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the participant countries, except Honduras, seal <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"powerlifting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/powerlifting\">powerlifting<\/a> golds. In one of the most exciting events, <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"Toronto 2015\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/toronto-2015-parapan-american-games\">Toronto 2015<\/a> Parapan American bronze medallist Fernando Acevedo won the men\u2019s up to 80kg thanks to a 135kg lift, ahead of Honduras\u2019 Gabriel Zelaya (110kg) and Panama\u2019s Gabriel Vasquez (95kg).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so happy because I could win this title in my country with my people. It is very special,\u201d said Acevedo still fresh from claiming gold.<\/p>\n<p>Nicaraguan Paralympic Committee Secretary General Dionicio Zeledon said: \u201cWe feel satisfied with the event we delivered. Athletes from the region had the unique opportunity to showcase their abilities on the international stage and earned necessary experience ahead of the next big competitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManagua 2018 was also a success in terms of media coverage, with all main Nicaraguan TV stations, newspapers, radio shows and websites covering the Games. Regional media also gave wide coverage to the event, making the performances of the different countries\u2019 athletes known to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides, millions followed the Games
