{"id":22201,"date":"2018-02-04T10:59:48","date_gmt":"2018-02-04T15:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/?p=22201"},"modified":"2018-02-04T11:00:36","modified_gmt":"2018-02-04T16:00:36","slug":"central-america-fta-south-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/central-america-fta-south-korea\/","title":{"rendered":"Central America and the FTA with South Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/fta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22202\" src=\"http:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/fta.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/fta.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panamaadvisoryinternationalgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/fta-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The signing of the trade agreement is scheduled for late February, a measure that bodes well for improving access to Korean high-tech products and increasing agro-exports from Central America.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"hlink\" title=\"agroexport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22agroexport%22\">&lt;span&lt; a=&#8221;&#8221;&gt;A report by Moody&#8217;s analyzes the impact expected in El Salvador and in the other countries of the region, from the entry into force of the free trade agreement with the Asian nation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report affirms that &#8220;<em>&#8230;In exchange for preferential market access to Korea\u2019s high-tech manufactured goods, El Salvador and its Central American neighbors\u2019 key commodity <\/em><em><a class=\"hlink\" title=\"exports\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22exports%22\">exports<\/a> will gain preferential access to South Korea, the world\u2019s ninth-largest importer. The agreement comes after more than two years of negotiation and legal review between the region and Korea, and although 90% of goods traded between Central America and Korea were negotiated on a regional basis, a handful of bilateral provisions penciled into the agreement will uniquely benefit El Salvador.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>&#8230; El Salvador\u2019s raw sugar exports will be able to enter the Korean market free of import quotas or tariffs, a key benefit for a sector that comprised 3.5% of exports through November 2017. Rules-of-origin provisions have remained strong for El Salvador\u2019s textile sector, with the agreement defining that neither El Salvador nor Korea can export to the other textile goods not made entirely within their domestic boundaries.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>&#8230; \u00a0Although trade with Korea has been relatively limited historically, the agreement has the potential to create stronger trade relations and export opportunities, as has been the case with previous trade agreements by the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) bloc. Exports from <a class=\"hlink\" title=\"FTA Central America - South Korea \" href=\"https:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22FTA+Central+America+-+South+Korea+%22\">Central America to Korea<\/a> have historically been dominated by Panama and have declined in recent years (see Exhibit 1). In 2016, the CAFTA countries exported about $550 million to Korea, or 1.8% of all the bloc\u2019s exports to the world, down from a high of 7.2% in 2009.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>See report &#8220;<a
