And they\u2019ve turned to Mexico for help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aldo Flores, Mexico\u2019s deputy energy secretary, said Thursday that the government\u2019s in talks with shale drillers in West Texas about a potential pipeline that would send their gas straight to Mexico\u2019s west coast, where it could then be liquefied and shipped overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Such a pipeline could eliminate the need for gas tankers to navigate the Panama Canal and hand the U.S. another outlet for the bounty of gas that President Donald Trump has vowed to \u201cunleash\u201d upon the world. It comes as at least one would-be U.S. gas exporter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/0803887D:US\">Sempra LNG &amp; Midstream<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-10-02\/lng-shippers-have-a-45-000-a-day-problem-at-the-panama-canal\">voices concerns<\/a> about delays at the canal that threaten to cost gas traders thousands of dollars a day.<\/p>\n<p>While Mexico doesn\u2019t have a concrete plan yet,\u00a0there\u2019s \u201ca lot of interest,\u201d Flores told reporters in Houston on Thursday. \u201cIt makes total sense for West Texas gas producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/ROKZ:KS\">South Korea<\/a>, China and Japan have emerged as some of the largest buyers of U.S. liquefied natural gas, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasts show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/terminal\/OW9WO66K50XU\">Asia\u2019s demand<\/a> for the fuel only stands to increase in the coming years. Meanwhile, Mexico is already the top consumer of U.S. LNG &#8212; it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/terminal\/OY0TUP6VDKHV\">has taken<\/a> more than 40 cargoes from the Louisiana terminal run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/LNG:US\">Cheniere Energy Inc.<\/a> since it opened last year.<\/p>\n<p>Record volumes of U.S. gas are flowing to Mexico just as the two countries and Canada hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-10-17\/mexico-and-canada-reject-u-s-nafta-demands-as-talks-wrap-up\">negotiations<\/a> over the\u00a0North American Free Trade Agreement. The talks have slowed down with Canada and Mexico rejecting what they see as hard-line U.S. proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mexico\u2019s west coast is already lined with import facilities that could be converted to export U.S. gas, including the Manzanillo one in the state of Colima. As Mexico lays more pipelines to reach U.S. gas, those import outlets may become obsolete anyway, said Jason Feer, global head of business intelligence at ship broker Poten &amp; Partners in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a couple of what will be soon stranded assets,\u201d and they could be turned into vehicles for export, Feer said. That\u2019s what\u2019s driving the push for a pipeline to the coast, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Panama Canal wouldn\u2019t be the only one facing more competition.\u00a0Pembina Pipeline Corp.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/VSN:CN\">Veresen Inc.<\/a> has been pitching an LNG export terminal in Oregon and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-09-22\/twice-rejected-u-s-lng-exporter-gives-project-another-shot\">reapplied<\/a> for approval from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/9904743Z:US\">Federal Energy Regulatory Commission<\/a> after being denied permits last year. Veresen has marketed the project as a faster way to get U.S. gas to Asia.<\/p>\n<p>A pipeline from Texas to Mexico\u2019s west coast could be a costly proposition, Bloomberg New Energy Finance analyst Anastacia Dialynas said Thursday.
