Lines (MOL) has taken delivery of the <em>MOL Triumph<\/em>, the new \u2018world\u2019s biggest containership\u2019 and the first \u2018megaship\u2019 to pass the 20,000 TEU threshold.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>MOL Triumph<\/em> was delivered Monday by Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, South Korea, where the vessel has been under construction since January 2016 \u2013 just 15 months ago.\u00a0The vessel was named during a ceremony at the shipyard held March 15.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111510\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buy.geni.us\/Proxy.ashx?TSID=9722&amp;GR_URL=http%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2cbvDRW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111510\" src=\"http:\/\/3kbo302xo3lg2i1rj8450xje.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/The-Container-Principle.jpg\" alt=\"The Container Principle\" width=\"200\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related Book: <a href=\"http:\/\/buy.geni.us\/Proxy.ashx?TSID=9722&amp;GR_URL=http%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2cbvDRW\">The Container Principle: How a Box Changes the Way We Think by Alexander Klose<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 400 meters in length and 58.8 meters in beam, the <em>MOL Triumph<\/em> is now officially the world\u2019s largest containership with capacity to carry a whopping 20,150 twenty-foot containers (TEU).\u00a0She\u00a0is\u00a0the first of six 20,000 TEU-class Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs)\u00a0MOL ordered\u00a0from SHI back in February 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>MOL Triumph<\/em> will operate on\u00a0THE Alliance\u2019s Asia to Europe trade via the FE2 service. Beginning in April she\u00a0will set off on her maiden voyage from Xingang, sailing to Dalian, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Yantian and Singapore. The vessel\u00a0will then transit through the Suez Canal and continue on to Tangier, Southampton, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Le Havre, before calling at Tangier and Jebel Ali on her\u00a0way back to Asia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MOL Group is honored to unveil this new vessel, which is the largest containership in the world,\u201d commented\u00a0Junichiro Ikeda, President and CEO of MOL. \u00a0\u201cThe vessel is equipped with various new sustainable technologies to provide more efficient fuel consumption and improved environmental performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new 20,000 TEU-class containerships are equipped with various highly advanced energy-saving technologies, such as\u00a0low friction underwater paint, high efficiency propeller and rudder, \u201csavor stator\u201d as a stream fin on the hull body, and an optimized fine hull form, which together can further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per container moved by about 25-30% when compared to 14,000 TEU-class containerships, according to MOL. The vessel has also been designed with the retrofit option to convert to LNG fueled ship in the future as the\u00a0International Maritime Organization\u2019s new regulation to limit SOx emission in marine fuels comes\u00a0into effect in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>MOL will take the delivery of the second 20,000 TEU-class vessel in May 2017. Eventually there will be six of the 20,000 TEU-class containerships, which will be phased in gradually on the existing trade routes of MOL.<\/p>\n<p>MOL Triumph takes the title as the \u201cworld\u2019s largest\u00a0containership\u201d from the 19,224 TEU <a href=\"http:\/\/gcaptain.com\/msc-containership-edge-cscl-globe-worlds-biggest-boxship\/\">MSC Oscar<\/a> and her three sister ships. The four vessels were delivered to Mediterranean Shipping Company in 2015 by South Korea\u2019s DSME.
