Costa Rica just made the service more expensive.\u00a0 Any taxes collected will come out of the customers pockets.<\/p>\n<p>A bill being prepared by the <a class=\"hlink\" title=\"Hotels\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22Hotels%22&amp;q2=mattersInCountry_es_le:%22Costa+Rica%22\">hotel<\/a> union would force platforms such as Airbnb to pay 13% sales tax and an additional 5% for national parks.<\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">The bill is being drafted by the National Chamber of <a class=\"hlink\" title=\"tourism\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22tourism%22&amp;q2=mattersInCountry_es_le:%22Costa+Rica%22\">Tourism<\/a>, which intends to submit it to the Legislative Assembly.<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\">If passed, this law would take effect for all platforms used for renting accommodation for tourism purposes, such as Airbnb, Homeaway and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\">The proposal aims to force these kinds of businesses to pay 13% sales <a class=\"hlink\" title=\"taxes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/search?q1=content_en_le:%22taxes%22&amp;q2=mattersInCountry_es_le:%22Costa+Rica%22\">tax<\/a> and an additional 5% tax which would be used to strengthen national parks.<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\">This additional charge would be applied only to those hosts that do not have tourist declaratory status granted by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT); thus the government would have a voluntary list of contributors.<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It is an issue of responsibility in the sector,&#8221; said Abarca, who denied having a special interest in putting an end to the competition but, rather, in formally integrating these rental platform, to be able to compete on equal terms.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">Days ago Airbnb representatives met with the government and proposed a plan to implement payment of sales tax.<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\">See: &#8220;<span dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralamericadata.com\/en\/article\/home\/Airbnb_quiere_pagar_impuestos_en_Costa_Rica\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Airbnb Wants to Pay Taxes in Costa Rica<\/u><\/a><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AirBnb has been very successful in Panama as it is in all parts of the world.
