Of the group that saw the description with an <u>effectively useless <\/u>chart, 97 percent believed the medicine was efficient, compared to 68 percent of the group that read only words, with no graphic.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conceivably therefore, if we want to make an American believe a lie all we have to do is this: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/hubfs\/Blog_Images\/A_science_chart.png?t=1474378312795\" alt=\"A_science_chart.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why expats are vulnerable to lies<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As an expat you\u2019re vulnerable to being sold lies \u2013 with or without charts<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s worse, you\u2019re likely to believe the lie because of the conviction of the person telling it, and\u00a0repeat the lie to other expats<\/li>\n<li>This results in a vicious circle of misinformation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expat Jerry Jones from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecultureblend.com\/the-seven-lies-of-living-cross-culturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Culture Blend<\/em><\/a> blog explains why expats are so vulnerable to misinformation:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn human years expats move from 5 to 16 in about two months. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Let me explain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Expats\u00a0are \u00fcber inquisitive on the front end. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat is that? \u00a0How do you say this? \u00a0What\u2019s that smell? \u00a0Why do they do that? What\u2019s the history behind this? Who? What? When? Where? How? Why? Why? Why?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Just like a 5 year old. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We embrace ignorance on a quest for answers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>BUT (and this is where it ALL falls apart): \u00a0<strong><u>We think when we get an answer we understand it<\/u><\/strong> (you should read that sentence again). \u00a0Soon we \u201cknow\u201d (finger quotes)\u00a0everything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Just like a 16 year old.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When we have answers we stop asking questions. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This can be a fatal flaw for expats. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is ALWAYS more to it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Innocent lies many expats are told<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Everyone speaks English<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s no such thing as culture shock<\/li>\n<li>Every day is like a holiday<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/hubfs\/Blog_Images\/Culture_shock.jpg?t=1474378312795\" alt=\"Culture_shock.jpg\" width=\"703\" height=\"501\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Dangerous lies expats are led to believe<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Expat financial advice\u00a0is &#8216;free&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Expats can get guaranteed investment returns<\/li>\n<li>Offshore plans are flexible, tax free and represent the best way for expats to save<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And just one more for good measure\u2026<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Your expat IFA\u00a0is a really nice person, acting in your best interests, as any friend would. You don&#8217;t even have to pay him! Just repay his kindness by referring him and his &#8216;free&#8217; advice to all your friends&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/knowledge-library\/checklist\/how-to-choose-a-financial-adviser-checklist\"><strong>Free checklist: How to choose a financial adviser \u00bb<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The truth behind the dangerous lies<\/h2>\n<p>Stop the vicious circle of misinformation by redirecting anyone who believes the above lies here: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/blog\/how-much-do-you-really-pay-for-financial-advice\" target=\"_blank\">Expats always pay for financial advice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However, because the commission that financial salespeople get isn&#8217;t disclosed, expats choosing &#8216;free&#8217; advice usually don&#8217;t know how much they&#8217;ve paid.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative is to choose a fee-based financial adviser whose fees are disclosed up front.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Investments marketed by many offshore financial salespeople\u00a0as having guaranteed returns are actually the most complicated, opaquely confusing and high-risk products on the market.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Structured Products and Unregulated Collective Investment Schemes are mostly rubbish; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/blog\/why-investment-guarantees-are-like-being-naked\" target=\"_blank\">exposure to them often leaves you short changed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/why-us\/what-you-get\" target=\"_blank\">Much better alternatives<\/a> exist delivering improved returns, lower costs and less risk.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Offshore savings plans, pensions and bonds all sound so innocent. In fact, they sound like the answer to many an expat\u2019s prayers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After all, they help expats make the most of their time abroad financially by committing them to saving a set amount each month, over a set term \u2013 right?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong!<\/p>\n<p>Certain savings plans, (also sold as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/blog\/how-much-is-your-offshore-investment-plan-worth-today\" target=\"_blank\">offshore pensions, offshore savings plans and regular savings accounts<\/a> for things like school fees planning), are easily misrepresented by financial salespeople.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, some of these types of plan were banned because they\u2019re often associated with high-pressure sales techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Many have opaque and expensive charging structures too, and pay those who sell them huge commissions.<\/p>\n<p>Once sold, there is then little incentive for the salesperson to continue working with you, because they will have received their fat commission cheque already.<\/p>\n<p>And just one more for good measure\u2026<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-losing-money-from-an-expat-millionaire\" target=\"_blank\">Choosing a financial adviser because they are nice<\/a> is the most common mistake we come across.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Just because an adviser:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<ul>\n<li>belongs to the same club or goes to the same pub as you<\/li>\n<li>is a friend of a friend<\/li>\n<li>is advising others at your company already<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean they are a gifted investment adviser.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t guarantee they are a qualified, licensed and regulated professional, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesinternational.com\/why-us\/chartered-financial-planners\" target=\"_blank\">legally required to adhere to a code of ethics<\/a>\u00a0either.<\/p>\n<p>The terms <em>\u2018financial adviser\u2019<\/em> or <em>\u2018IFA\u2019<\/em> are used all too frequently offshore.
