Sure, the explosive fighter won championships across four different weight classes and was victorious in an incredible 70 fights by knockout.<\/p>\n

Duran has penned his autobiography “I am Duran.”<\/h2>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Yet his career imploded more than once, knocked to the mat by alcohol, greed and an ego bigger than most of his opponents.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n, 65, never known to be humble, details his life in the spotlight and the ring in a new book titled \u201cI Am Dur\u00e1n.\u201d<\/p>\n

Much like the infamous \u201cNo Mas\u201d fight with Leonard, Dur\u00e1n life is steeped in myth and mayhem.<\/p>\n

Like the night in 1984 a guy handed him $250,000 in a Miami nightclub to set up a fight with Tommy \u201cHitman\u201d Hearns.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1ntook the money and partied with two women who told him they were lesbians. They said they were up for a threesome until Dur\u00e1n got on top of the wrong woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe got all angry with me and spoiled what should have been a great way to end the night,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n

The party raged on for two and a half weeks as Dur\u00e1n burned through the cash going from one club to another.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had the best time of my life,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt went on so long that, by the end of it, I\u2019d almost forgotten about the Hearns fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger, faster Hearns beat Dur\u00e1n into such a daze he couldn\u2019t find his own corner of the ring. Hearns then delivered the knockout blow, the first Dur\u00e1n had ever taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I hit the canvas in the middle of that first round, what came into my mind was those two lesbians in Miami. I don\u2019t know why but it made me laugh,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n fought his way back to the top, of course, and then did it again, taking the middleweight crown from Iran Barkley in 1989 when he was 37.<\/p>\n

He was still in the ring at 50, not retiring until 2001.<\/p>\n

Panama\u2019s favorite son packed a lot of partying into his five decades as one of the most famed boxers in the world.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n’s glory days kicked off when he beat Ken Buchanan to win the world lightweight championship at Madison Square Garden in 1972.<\/p>\n

General Omar Torrijos, Panama\u2019s military ruler, sent a plane stocked with champagne and caviar to the freshly minted 21-year-old champion.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n’s taste for the high life after rising out of the Panama City slum of El Chorrillo never wavered.<\/p>\n

Time and again, he recounts being drunk in this club or that club, often with different mistresses.<\/p>\n

At home he strolled around with his pet lion, Walla. In New York, Dur\u00e1n didn\u2019t need the lion to run with the big cats.<\/p>\n

Sylvester Stallone wanted him for a bit part in Rocky II and got a bit cocky in their sparring sessions. So Dur\u00e1n tagged him a good one.<\/p>\n

The movie \u201cHands of Stone,\u201d currently in theaters starring Edgar Ramirez and Robert De Niro, presents a fictionalized version of Dur\u00e1n’s rise and fall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI Am Dur\u00e1n\u201d tells the fighter\u2019s fabled drama from his own corner.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n confesses to the bevy of women that he, a married man, enjoyed throughout his life. He boasts of the parties in Panama where 200 people packed his house.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n gave away money to anyone who asked. As much as $5,000 an hour, by his count.<\/p>\n

A party with Robert De Niro and some guys from the movie he was making, \u201cRaging Bull,\u201d racked up a $7,000 tab at Victor’s Caf\u00e9 downtown. De Niro paid.<\/p>\n

For once, Dur\u00e1n was the first to quit the festivities. He had to train early the next morning.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n hated training, never really accepting it as the price he had to pay to take home the purse.<\/p>\n

Still, he got himself into shape to get into the ring with the boxer described to him as a \u201csensation among all the gringos.\u201d<\/p>\n

That first fight with Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980 was known as the \u201cBrawl in Montreal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leonard had an $8 million guarantee compared to Dur\u00e1n\u2019s paltry $1.5 million payday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I wanted to do was defeat the pinup boy of the United States,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n punished Leonard through 15 rounds, decisively winning the welterweight title in a stunning upset.<\/p>\n

After the fight, Dur\u00e1n refused a ride in President Aristides Sanchez\u2019s plane home to Panama.<\/p>\n

Instead, he beat it to New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hung out with my low-life friends, who never had any money, as well as the millionaires,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNight after night, we partied until everything was just one big haze.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt got to the point where I weighed 200 pounds! But I didn\u2019t care \u2014 there weren\u2019t anymore fights to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then the bloated fighter got bad news.<\/p>\n

If Dur\u00e1n wanted his own $8 million payday, he would have to show up at the Superdome for a rematch with Leonard only five months after their first fight.<\/p>\n

Grossly out of shape and overweight, Dur\u00e1n kept partying. Back in Panama, he\u2019d train by day, hit the clubs by night.<\/p>\n

That November night in the Superdome, Leonard danced around an ever-weakening Dur\u00e1n, owning the fight.<\/p>\n

By the seventh round he was taunting Dur\u00e1n, sticking out his chin inviting a hit.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n was taking punches, one flush in the face at the end of the seventh.<\/p>\n

A round later, he signaled to the ref he wanted out. The fight was over.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n vehemently denies he called quits by saying \u201cNo m\u00e1s.\u201d He claims that was Howard Cosell\u2019s invention.<\/p>\n

Regardless, the night of his shame went down in history, and will forever be known as the \u201cNo M\u00e1s\u201d fight.<\/p>\n

Ray Arcel, Dur\u00e1n\u2019s widely respected trainer, quit in disgust. His manager, Carlos Eleta, left him with no money to fly home.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n was shocked and unprepared for the disdain that met him everywhere. In Panama, they threw rocks at his house.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was I suppose to do after beating Leonard in the first fight? Stay at home, go to church everyday, not screw around and not drink?\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n fought his way back, of course, then did it again.<\/p>\n

After the boxing world, and all of Panama, turned their backs on him following the debacle of the Leonard rematch in 1980, there should have been no coming back.<\/p>\n

But Dur\u00e1n did, which is one of the reasons he\u2019s lionized as one of the all-time greats.<\/p>\n

He took the WBA light middleweight title from Davey Moore in 1983.<\/p>\n

Later that year, he became the rare fighter to last a competitive 15 rounds with middleweight champ Marvelous Marvin Hagler.<\/p>\n

The rankings vary but Dur\u00e1n is widely considered among the top 10 greatest boxers of all time.<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n, now living modestly in Panama having lost his fortune, has his own words for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is only one legend and that\u2019s me,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
