The United States falls two places to fourth position, overtaken by Sweden (2nd) and Singapore (3rd).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here at home, Latin America continues it&#8217;s movement up the ranks<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReflecting the strong resilience withinLatin America\u00a0and the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0in the face of the recent severe global economic downturn, the \u2026 assessment for the region for this year points to the important progress made by several countries in improving and reinforcing their competitiveness fundamentals,\u201d the forum says in its report. \u201cThese results confirm the important strides the region has made in recent decades toward sounder fiscal management, increased market efficiency and openness, and export diversification, among other areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Panama Shines<\/h2>\n<p>Panama\u00a0jumped from 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place last year to second place among\u00a0Latin America\u2019s economies this year thanks to its score gaining 0.12 points to 4.33. Globally, it jumped from 59<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place to 53<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanama\u00a0posts one of the largest improvements in the region, climbing to 53<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0this year thanks in large part to a more positive assessment of infrastructure quality, increased macroeconomic stability and technological readiness,\u201d the World Economic Forum says. \u201cThis advance reflects the country\u2019s recent important investment in upgrading its infrastructure, its sound macroeconomic management in recent times of crisis, its prowess in absorbing technology (ranked 7th for the variable on FDI and technology transfer), and its increase in ICT penetration rates. The country also continues to benefit from well-developed financial markets. Here&#8217;s a summary of the conference highlights, with links&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Pamela Cox, Vice President for the Latin America and Caribbean Region for the World Bank, a co-host of the Americas Conference\u00ae, spoke about the banks&#8217; commitment to the region. &#8220;This year we can deliver better economic news. After the economic collapse, the region is getting back to solid growth; the latest forecast suggest we will see a growth of 5.1% this year,&#8221; while stating that &#8220;this is an excellent sign that Latin America is returning to its usual strong pattern of growth.&#8221; However, Cox continued to explain that &#8220;growth rates in Latin America need to be strong and sustained to see expansion of opportunity.
