\"walden\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Walden was one of my favorite books.\u00a0 Thoreau inspired me as he still does today.\u00a0 I found Boquete to be a place to live “deliberately” and it “is a bold defense of individual ethics, which nevertheless must be practiced without damaging one\u2019s fellow inhabitants of the planet. It\u2019s a strong argument that relentless labor without leisure, and modern luxuries without the riches of the natural world, will prove hollow in the long run”.\u00a0 This is a great article authored by Laurie Blair and edited by Guilermo Jimenez that appeared in PanAmPost.<\/p>\n

Anyone who\u2019s spent time in the great outdoors will have heard it before. \u201cI loved that\u00a0Into the Wild<\/em> film, you know? It really inspired me,\u201d goes the refrain, as inevitable as the speaker\u2019s beanie hat, oversized pack, and hiking sandals.<\/p>\n

The 2007 film<\/a>, based on the\u00a0book<\/a>\u00a0of the same name, charts the adventures of Californian drifter Christopher McCandless, who ventured into Alaska in April 1992, and was found starved to death five months later.\u00a0But richer material \u2014\u00a0which inspired the young adventurer himself \u2014\u00a0can be found some 150 years previously.<\/p>\n

From 1845, writer and poet Henry David Thoreau<\/a> launched his own experiment in wilderness living, braving freezing winters in a self-built cabin a stone\u2019s throw from Walden Pond<\/a>, Massachusetts. For a little over two years, he grew his own crops, gathered his own fuel, and refused to pay taxes: the original libertarian survivalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to\u00a0the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach \u2026\u00a0I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life.\u201d<\/p>\n

So writes Harvard-schooled Thoreau in his 1854 account, Walden, or, Life in the Woods<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0today one of the \u201cclassic American\u201d reads. But such a position comes with risks. Modern US writer John Updike noted<\/a> that its treasured status among the \u201cback-to-nature, preservationist, anti-business, civil-disobedience\u201d school means the book \u201crisks being as revered and unread as the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wealth of Nature<\/h4>\n

But Thoreau\u2019s part-memoir, part-meditation on the natural world has lot to offer. Walden<\/i> is at turns a satirical account of New England society,\u00a0a damning critique of mediocre politics, and a vibrant historical document. It\u2019s also\u00a0a book for our times, showing how individuals can forge change only in and of themselves.<\/p>\n

Thoreau didn\u2019t go too far to experience his epiphany \u2014\u00a0he was only a few miles from Concord, MA, on land owned by his benefactor and fellow-poet Walt Whitman<\/a>, and wandered into town when he pleased.<\/p>\n

Thoreau\u2019s landscape is populated with ancient hunting trails, struggling Irish tenants, and mysterious ruins.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But from his wood-and-plaster hut, Thoreau was able to observe in detail the changing of the seasons. Migrating geese and ducks come and go, wild hares nest beneath his house, squirrels almost eat the grain out of his hand.<\/p>\n

His description of fishing in the dead of night, the stars mirrored in the placid lake below, is striking. And when the pond freezes over into thick, marbled ice, laborers arrive<\/a> to carve it up into thick slabs for export:\u00a0\u201cThe sweltering inhabitants of Charleston and New Orleans, of Madras and Bombay and Calcutta, drink at my well \u2026 The pure Walden water is mingled with the sacred water of the Ganges.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

For Thoreau\u2019s strong moral sense of nature \u2014\u00a0he believes man\u2019s \u201cdestiny\u201d is to stop eating meat, just as cannibalism has died out \u2014\u00a0doesn\u2019t draw a distinction with mankind. His landscape is populated with ancient hunting trails, struggling Irish tenants, and mysterious ruins.<\/p>\n

And despite a strong anti-government, pro-enterprise streak, he slams the wanton destruction of the woods by those who fail to appreciate their long-term worth, thinking only of their \u201cmoney value.\u201d<\/p>\n

Escaping \u201cOdd-Fellow Society\u201d<\/h4>\n

Thoreau\u2019s spiritualism may not sit well with contemporary liberals. But spending a night in the Concord cells for non-payment of taxes seems to have cemented a concrete distaste for society\u2019s relentless attempt to \u201cpursue and paw [the individual] with their dirty institutions\u201d and \u201cdesperate odd-fellow society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ask for not at once no government, but\u00a0at once<\/em> a better government.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s even tempting to see him as an early advocate for anarchism, later suggesting in his influential essay Civil Disobedience<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>that \u201cgovernment is best which governs not at all, and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet his position is more gradualist than the \u201cno-government men,\u201d instead asking \u201cfor not at once no government, but\u00a0at once<\/em> a better government. Let\u00a0every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Thoreau\u2019s experience at Walden Pond\u00a0endowed him with a strong conception of individual<\/em> politics,\u00a0and the \u201cencouraging fact\u201d of man\u2019s \u201cunquestionable ability \u2026 to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Humanist Self-Reliance<\/h4>\n

\"Thoreau,<\/a><\/p>\n

He finds that \u201cDoing-good \u2026 is one of the professions which are full,\u201d and criticizes those who bestow huge amounts of money and time on charity while living \u201cupon another man\u2019s shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his call to tackle the root of evil rather than the branches, Thoreau would find much in common with critics of international aid<\/a>, and proponents of lowering barriers to<\/a>, and unfair advantages<\/a> in, global trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0Walden<\/em> is a bold defense of individual ethics, which nevertheless must be practiced without damaging one\u2019s fellow inhabitants of the planet. It\u2019s a strong argument that relentless labor without leisure, and modern luxuries without the riches of the natural world, will prove hollow in the long run.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need the tonic of wildness \u2026 we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be infinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us,\u201d Thoreau concludes.<\/p>\n

We need \u201cthe sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thunder-cloud, and the rain which lasts three weeks.\u201d Of course, that\u2019s assuming you can find a patch of wilderness without a gaggle of fellow sandal-wearers.<\/p>\n
