Environmental Endorsement of Panama Metro’s Line 3

An environmental permit has now been granted as well as approval for financing of its construction in February, to develop the Metro line that will reach Panama West.

Progress of the project has now been consolidated now that along with funding, which was approved in February, approval has been given to the Environmental Impact Study, which states that “… the line will occupy 160 hectares in its area of influence, of which  42 hectares possess vegetation”.

Prensa.com reports that “… as a measure of compensation, the promoter, in this case the Metro Department will have to develop a reforestation plan, which involves planting 10 trees for every one that is felled.”

Line 3 will leave Albrook station and pass through Arraijan, Nuevo Chorrillo before arriving at Ciudad del Futuro. It will have a total length of 26.7 kilometers, along which 14 stations will be distributed.

This project will use the Monorail system, and will cater for up to 20,000 passengers in one direction during peak hours (in phase 1).

Each train will have 6 carriages and operation of the line will be divided into two circuits: East Circuit: Albrook-Nuevo Chorrillo (17.5 km) and Complete Circuit: Albrook-Cuidad del Futuro (25.85 km).
