Some 6,000 Neopanamax Vessels Passed through the Panama Canal

News from Panama / Tuesday, April 30th, 2019

With the transit of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vessel Energy Liberty, the Panama Canal reached this Wednesday the figure of 6,000 neopanamax vessels, which validates the impact of this route for world maritime trade.

We have received, once again, as a result of teamwork, the transit neopanamax 6,000 through the expanded Canal, less than three years after its opening’, said the administrator of this interoceanic route, Jorge Luis Quijano.

Out of this figure, more than 50 percent of ships that transited so far belong to the segment of container ships, followed in 26 percent by liquefied petroleum gas and another 11 percent of LNG.

These are joined by bulk carriers, tankers, vehicle carriers and cruise ships, as a result of continuous optimization and investment in operations, which provides capacity, flexibility and efficiency.

According to the Canal route authorities, the changes introduced also included modifications to the Transit Reserve System, which increased from six to eight the number of movements and the passage of four LNG vessels in one day, as occurred last October.
